Antigua to Copan

I am interested in traveling from Antigua to Copan. I understand that it is approx. 5 hrs by road. Does the road trip pass through interesting areas? Can a private car&driver be easily arranged and, if so, what is approx. cost?
Is there an air travel alternative(charter or scheduled plane)? If so, what is approx. cost? Thanks to all responders.

Hi, mlz -
The only flight alternative at this point is to fly from Guatemala City to San Pedro Sula and bus to Copán Ruinas (3 hours), so you'd be better off on the road in my opinion. I'm a bus fan so what I'd do is take the Hedman Alas bus from Antigua to Copán Ruinas, stay as long as you can, and head back to GC the same way (about $75 total for both trips). The buses are 1st class, comfy seats, air conditioning, movies (usually English with Spanish subtitles) and snacks are served. There are shuttles and cheaper buses available as well, but Hedman is comfortable and very safe. Here's a link:

I spent more than 2 weeks in Copán Ruinas last summer and LOVED it - let me know if you're interested in ideas for things to do and see in addition to the lovely town and ruins while you're there. Happy trails!

Thank you very much for your input and your offer of further assistance. I have been told that there is an airstrip in Copan Ruinas and there are charter flights available. I just can not seem to locate anyone that can help with the arrangements. How long is the bus trip? Is it interesting? Are there sights to see on route?

The airstrip has come up a time or 2 on the Thorntree Forum but lately no one has had any positive responses to inquiries. Here's the site:

I have traveled many times in Guatemala and find that area of Honduras to be beautiful and interesting but have never made the trip between Antigua or Guatemala and Honduras. You can check out the Hedman site for time estimates. Here's a link to my activities in the Copan area:

Happy trails!
