I wouldn't get much in colones out of the country, they usually have a pretty bad exchange rate. I'd also get a little higher denominations than 1000 - doing a rough calculation so I may be off a little but as little as $100 USD would be about 55 1000 notes.

cocoa -- Thanks. - Having Fodorite pics in the book is pretty cool I think. ;-) I think the current exchange in CR is 566-570 colones to $1. So you can see how that translates into the c1000 denominations...As tully said you'll probably be better off carrying some larger bills like c5000 and c10,000.
