Ambergris Caye Accommodations
 

We're thinking about Belize for a snorkeling vacation. I've been looking into staying at The Landings at Tres Cocos in Ambergris Caye - a condo style complex. It gets great reviews on Trip Advisor but was hoping for additional info from folks here. Traveling with my husband - we're primarily looking for sun and snorkeling. Suggestions about accommodations and/or areas offering best snorkeling are appreciated. Thanks.

We loved the snorkeling at Hol Chan - saw sea turtles, nurse sharks, huge rays, and lots of colorful tropical fish. There's sea grass along a lot of the shore, so for the best snorkeling, you'll most likely want to take a tour. Belize is beautiful.

The managers at The Landings at Tres Cocos are really nice people. The couple of condos I've been in have been very nice. If memory serves, there is a sea wall along the entire property. There's also construction in the area. I personally don't care for that area of the island, but people who stay there seem very happy.

Most snorkeling is done by boat. The reef is half a mile or so out from shore. Some people kayak to the reef and snorkel that way. On far north Ambergris, at Tranquility Bay, you can easily swim to the reef and snorkel.

A few resorts have made small artificial reefs off the end of the dock. Ramon's is one, it also has what I would consider the best stretch of beach on the island. Caribbean Villa is another, it also has a nice stretch of beach, although not really swimmable like the one at Ramon's. It's shallow too far out. The snorkeling off of the docks in no way compares to the reef, but, it's fun, and the price is right. You can use the docks to snorkel from whether you're staying at the resort or not.

Thanks for all input. Now we're thinking about Hasamasi Resort in Hopkins. It is more expensive - but it get great reviews and at this particular time in our lives an all-inclusive package sounds fun, easy & relaxing. I'd love to hear from anyone who has been to Hasamasi.

I really enjoyed caye casa which gives you access to their sailboat (and captain) at unbelievably reasonable prices. ($150 half day for whole boat at the time we went although I know prices have gone up in last couple of years. We went out with a another couple and so split it 4 ways....) The snorkeling was great although be aware that you won't be snorkeling right off shore and most spots requires a boat.
