Ambergris Caye - a few questions
1. Is there a bridge across the San Pedro River?
2. We're looking for a great beach resort not too far from the "action" of San Pedro. Is the Mata Chica too far north? Are cabs readily available? 3. We plan to split our visit, two nights at two different resorts. (We're checking out potential wedding locations.) Other suggestions? The chosen resorts need to be good for a wedding group. Any other suggestions or tips? Thanks! |
Yes, there is a bridge over the river now. But, no vehicular traffic, other than golf carts.
For me Mata Chica is too far north. About six miles. You would need to take a water taxi back and forth, which gets expensive. I'd look at Victoria House, only a couple miles south of town. If you like to walk, you can walk to town, at least during the day. Cabs are cheap and plentiful south of the cut. For something cheaper, look at Xanadu or Banana Beach. |
Great info, thanks.
We are looking at Victoria House. If one is staying north of the bridge, can one rent a golf cart and use it to get to town, or are water taxis the only option? |
Yes, but golf carts rent for about $100 a day. Also, the road is very rough and would be difficult to navigate at night.

Okay, we've decided on 2 nights at Victoria House & 2 at Mata Chica.
Many thanks. |
If you don't mind moving around, I think that looks like a great plan. Give you some exposure to both parts of the island.
Have a great stay. When are you traveling? |
Now we've decided on 2 nights at Journey's End and 2 at Banyan Bay (due to better suite availability).
Thoughts? Comments? How does one generally travel from Journey's End to San Pedro? How would a large group of people travel? Water taxi?? |
The only way I've ever traveled from Journey's End to San Pedro is by bicycle, but that was just during the day. Water taxi is probably your best option. IF it's dry, and IF it's during the day, a golf cart would be fun. If it's been raining, the 'road' north is usually a muddy mess.
When are you traveling? |
I've driven by golf cart many times to and by Journey's End. As others have noted, the golf cart path can be a "little" muddy after rains, though it gets worse north of Journey's End. To go to Journey's End, which is almost 4 miles north of town, is a pretty good jaunt and quickly gets tiresome. After dark, it's a bit challenging.
By the way, a golf cart typically rents for US$50 to $65 a day, depending on the length of rental and the company and also the time of year. If you are doing a lot of back and forth on North Ambergris, I'd get a gas cart. There's a US$5 round-trip charge to cross the bridge over the river channel. Banyan Bay is great. I'm not a big fan of Journey's End. You might read the tripadvisor.com on guest reactions to the resort. --Lan Sluder |
