allegro resort, playa del carmen???

Any recent experiences at this resort. We are considering it for a family get-away - especially concerned about activities for my 12 yr old daughter. We are not big on night life, but do want something clean, good beach activites and decent food (hopefully with some local flavor). The price is right at the Allegro, but I'd appreciate feedback.
Thanks.

We stayed there last year. the service and accomodations are definately a 3 out of 5 apples. Nothing impressive about this resort. We just got back from the RIU Playacar which is just 2 hotels to the south of Allegro Resort. We booked at the same price for which the Allegro was asking. The RIU is newer, the rooms are bigger, the staff is more accomodating, pleasant, the food was very good. We took our 5&10 year old. While the kids activities were not very structured, my ten year daughter old found numerous friend to play with. They do have a nightly show for the kids. If you can get the RIU for the same price as the Allegro I highly recommend you go to the Riu Playacar. I give it a '4'. It also has better pools and beach area.
Although I don't have kids myself, I recently stayed at the Reef Club in playa and would highly recommend. Not only for location, but also for kids. They have a great activities staff. This hotel is located on one end of the "strip" so it is way less crowded than the beaches farther down. Food was good, lots of choices, a great grill for lunch with hambergers and hotdogs, chicken, fries, guac, you name it for lunch. You might check this out.

Of these 3 resorts mentioned, I would stay at the Riu Playacar or Yucatan.
I thought the rooms at Reef Club were small and did not like the pool area.
Other great choices if you can get a good price are Iberostar's Tucan/Quetza(built around a jungle, with monkeys in the trees) or Parasio and Barcelo Mayan (fantastic beach).
An agent who specializes in Cancun/Playa del Carmen can tell you which hotel is the best value for your travel dates.

We stayed at the Allegro resort At Playa Del Carmen and thought it was one of the worse places I have ever been to!!! First, they overbooked and put us in their other resort that was off the beach for 2 nights! This was far worse and less expensive then the beach front resort that we paid for . You had to take a 20 minute bus ride to the beach. We were told we could eat at the larger beachfront resort, but the shuttle bus stops running at 6:00 so you would have to pay for a taxi that the resort will not pick up the tab for. When I asked to be reimbursed for the price difference, they told me that they would give us a tour if we signed a paper that we went to the substandard resort voluntarily! Apparently they often overbook the better resort and fill up their horrible resort with the overflow and still charge you the higher price! I guess that is why they have the forms ready for you to sign! We were not the only people they did this to. When we did get our rooms 2 days later, they were dirty and bug infested. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had and we go away to a tropical resort every winter. My sister, who is a sigle mother, saved for a long time to bring herself and her 2 children on this vacation. The way they treated her just broke my heart! I contacted the main office and they only offered to give us a 50% discount off of the BOOK price (which is always higher) and we would have to go back to the same resort. No thank you! If you are smart, you will stay away!! I heard that Occidental was no better!
