All inclusives vs condo rental
We have been to Playa del Carmen in all inclusive resorts several times but are now considering Akumal. What experiences have people had with renting condos? Can anyone help me compare the two experiences. We are "young" 60 yr olds quite active, like good food, bird watching, hiking, all water activities. Night life is not vital although we would like to have some options there.
Has anyone had any condo rental successes in Akumal or Playa del carmen?

We stayed a few years back in a condo on the beach in Akumal. Now there are many more hotels there, it may be crowded. It was very nice. There is a great lagoon for snorkeling. You should have no trouble finding good places to eat so no need for AI. I particularly liked Tulum where we stayed this last August at Ana y Jose cabanas on the beautiful beach. Tulum Cabanas is where I will stay next visit. If you have a car you can stay at both Akumal then Tulum. We are 63/75 year olds and do a lot of snorkeling/eating, beach walking and ocean swimming, etc. Have fun.

Tulum does not have good snorkeling - too many waves at the beach - but it is gorgeous. The best snorkeling in the area is on Akumal Bay. Try locogringo.com - they are the best at renting condos in the entire area and there is a great, active message board there with people who can answer your questions on any specific property.

Hi again. Akumal has the best snorkeling, compared to Tulum. But Tulum has a wonderful swimming spot just below one of the temples. We liked a little lagoon we walked to in Akumal, I think it is Yalku. But it is best to ask people to comment on the situation now after the hurricanes. Regarding the Any y Jose cabanas, there were a couple of families we visited with while we were eating at the outside deck of the restaurant. They all were happy with their accommodations.
