Akumal or Playa Del Carmen?

Not too familiar with the area, dont know how close these places are to each other. Am trying to decide between Copacabana Beach Resort in Akumal or Viva Wyndham Azteca in Playa Del Carmen. Understand the beaches in Akumal have rocky bottoms (is that right)? Wanting sun, fun and shopping.

Actually...the Copa is in Xpu-Ha which has a wonderful sandy beach and a bit of snorkling (not spectacular)...look for the dark spots in this aerial photo. Xpu-Ha is about 15-20 minutes south of PDC.

If your screename is accurate, then Akumal is not a theme park. You might be more interested in some of the all-inclusive resorts nearer Playa Del Carmen. I love Akumal mostly because it's quiet and laid back. The snorkling is fantastic, but the beach isn't great for typical beach lovers. The beaches around PDC are beautiful and you can walk on them for hours.

Just got back from Riveria Maya (Love the place!!!) We love playa del carmen area and there is plenty to see, do and close to great beaches area. As far as the snorkeling you can do it right off the beach but the reef is off the coast line just a little with some great stuff.....we saw----barracuda,lots of colorful fish and even stingrays(small).....have an awesome time.....ps we stayed all inclusive cause with have 4 adult eating kids along!!!
