Akumal area

We are planning this trip for over Thanksgiving and I was reading that this time of year is not very good for diving or snorkeling because it is the rainy season. Has anyone been down there during this time period and how was the diving and snorkeling?

If it will not be clear, we may want to wait until February.

I think I'm correct in saying that by November hurricane season is over, that the rainy season is June-October.
Of course, you can end up with rain any time of the year, but Thanksgiving should have good weather, warm if not hot...

I would check into it a bit more. We have friends who had plans to go at Thanksgiving a few years ago and there was a hurricane then.

No, the hurrican season ends in October

From the BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/feature...e_season.shtml

"From the beginning of October, the likelihood of storms originating off the west coast of Africa becomes less and less, with more storms occurring in the western Caribbean. By November, storms are not very common as the Gulf of Mexico cools quickly as the Northern Hemisphere winter sets in."

just checked online at Cnn weather, they say hurricane season starts June 1, ends November 30th. So technically Thanksgiving is during hurricane season.
But as RBCal said, storms are not common then, and it's also unusual to have a June hurricane -- knock wood!

There is the risk of a hurricane but the bulk of them tend to hit in AUgust/September. Novemeber is actually considered the dry season. Rainy season runs through mid-October (starts in April).

Thanks for all your advise about the Hurricanes I believe they are rare that time of year but I was concerned about the snorkling off shore and if anyone has done it that time of year and how it was?

I've snorkled in August in Akumal and had no problems...but there wasn't a hurricane coming. You should be fine.
