Airfares are outrageous to Buenos Aires

I cant believe the airfares to BA. Last year my ticket was just under $900 and this year I see fares at $1500-1700. I cant believe that people are paying that much. Its a shame because it it such a beautiful country and BA is fabulous. Its hard for me to justify a trip there now even with the exchange rate. The dollar is actually strengthening against the euro too. Fares to Europe are much lower and hotels there can be the same or less than in BA. But you cant get a good Bife de Chorizo or the same alfajores in Madrid as you can in Buenos Aires. I wish I had enough FF miles for the trip. That is still a deal if you can get the seat availability.

Have you treied LAN? They have been advertising much cheaper rates from te States? Suerte!

soulskier Sep 13th, 2008 04:52 AM

I just found LAX-EZE for $977 on LAN.

travelme Sep 13th, 2008 05:07 AM

Wow those are good fares. The problem is that I fly from Boston at peak times, I guess. Unfortunately, I have no other choice but to travel at these time. Having said that, I always have traveled at peak periods and the airfare was still hundreds of dollars cheaper. I'll try Lan Chile.
Gracias.

Oh boy! $2000 to BA for the dates I wanted in February with Lan Chile. I hope the airfares decrease sometime soon

avrooster Sep 13th, 2008 05:56 AM

Travelme: may I ask what are your exact intended travel dates, because I tried booking for Feb. 4/Feb. 11 and it cost less than 1.600 dollars?

travelme Sep 13th, 2008 06:02 AM

Well I would be travelling from Feb 13 until the 21. I could also do Feb 14 until the 20 of February. Unfortunately, I cant travel any other dates.
I know that I will return to Argentina within 2 years and I'll try to stay longer to make the trip worth the expense.
Thank you Avrooster.

Jeff_Costa_Rica Sep 13th, 2008 07:45 AM

We're all finding airfares higher than last year, with the price of oil being what it is.

Argentina is a long way away from Boston, a lot farther than Europe.

tengohambre Sep 13th, 2008 08:39 AM

Boy, I have found the same thing. Airfares this year are much higher than last year, when tkts could be obtained for less than $1,000. I imagine it is the price of oil. But, what I also see, when you plug in your dates to a site like Vayama (which seems to have good fares), is that fees and taxes are almost equal to the ticket price. Ahy Chihuaha!

The Lan website lets you see a graph of tkt prices for the dates surrounding your requested date. Just moving a day or two, in some cases, can save you a few hundred dollars per ticket.

Also, Delta is soon starting a JFK-EZE non stop. Look at that. If much cheaper you can get yourself to JFK via bus, train, etc.

Also, look at going with TAM Brazil. Yes, you have to get to JFK, and yes there's a stop in Sao Paolo, but it might be much cheaper. Also, look for a few Latin travel agencies who might have slightly better fares. Check out bacctravel.com Sometimes they have some good fares. Buena suerte.

avrooster Sep 13th, 2008 08:47 AM

You are absolutely right, travelme, for those dates, it costs $ 2000.

Those hungry suggestions (LOL) by tengohambre could be very good, so I would suggest checking them out.

Try: www.despegar.com
I found a flight with Delta for your dates Boston-NY-BA for usd 1465.

I am going to brazil in october. I have used BACC Travel in New York City. This is the second time i have used them.

They are a consolidator. You might want to contact them and see if they have fares to BA.

They were about $500 to $600 cheaper than even the online sites.

Guenmai Sep 13th, 2008 03:35 PM

Yes, the fares are high. But the fares are high to a lot of parts of the world. I vacation about 3 times a year... Once a year in Europe and usually twice a year in S.E. Asia.
I was just looking up some info on United Airlines so that I can buy 9,000 frequent flyer miles, for a little over $300 and then hope to get a frequent flyer ticket to BA. I'll need to try to get the FF ticket within the next 4 weeks.
I hope to get there around the end of Aug 2009 to around the end of the first week of September. Is this period a busy period or not? And how is the weather then? I have looked up weather reports and some have said in a range of 60s-80s and others have said 30s-60s. That's a BIG difference. Happy Travels!

drdawggy Sep 13th, 2008 04:37 PM

From Texas on American I am finding fares of $1850 for March 2009...significantly higher than i paid this year for my several trips to Buenos Aires.

travelme Sep 14th, 2008 02:43 AM

I was in BA August 2007 and the weather was in the upper 40's-low 50's. With a good coat you will be fine. If the sun is shining it isn't bad at all and nothing like winters in the Northeast.
As far as miles to travel, I say use them now before the airlines get the bright idea of requiring more miles and a fee to use those miles to travel to SA.

drdawggy Sep 14th, 2008 01:58 PM

Travelme, The airlines already have the idea...they just have not implemented it. I will certainly do my best to use my miles soon....before they become very costly to use.

Guenmai Sep 17th, 2008 01:05 PM

Travelme...weather in the 40s and 50s? Yikes. That's Siberia to me. I'm from L.A. area and when I'm not in L.A. am usually vacationing in Bangkok or other areas of S.E. Asia with the exception of a short 8-day, annual stay in Paris, in the spring, when it can also be a bit uncomfortable chilly for me.

But, August/Sept would be the best time for me to go to BA, so I'll have to bite the bullet and REALLY button up. Smiles. Thanks for the info. Happy Travels!

Guenmai Sep 17th, 2008 01:24 PM

correction..."uncomfortably chilly". Happy Travels!

travelme Sep 17th, 2008 04:18 PM

Hey Guenmai. You never know, you may get days in the 60's but dont count on it. BA is such a great city and you will really enjoy being there. It might remind you of Paris. There are some neighborhoods that do have a Parisian flair to them. Especially in the Recoleta area. It is actually my favorite part of the city although Palermo is wonderful too. Now I am getting homesick for BA.

Guenmai Sep 18th, 2008 09:46 AM

Thanks, travelme. I kind of figured it might be a bit like Paris. I've been vacationing in Paris, almost annually, since the mid 70s...way back in my univeristy-aged days. Smiles. Happy Travels!
