Air route to Oaxaca
 

We have reservations to go to Oaxaca for Christmas, along with two friends. I understand that we can fly from New York area to Oaxaca thru Miami/Mexico City, but that it is also possible to fly to Houston, and then direct to Oaxaca. Can anyone enlighten me about your experience in doing either of the above itineraries? And are there other airlines than AA that do those flights? Many thanks for any advice.

Have been flying to Oaxaca for many years. Right now I live in Arkansas. If I use the direct flight from Houston I can leave Litle Rock at 6 a.m. and be in Oaxaca at 11:00 a.m. or so. Amazing, since my first trip there years ago required an overnight and 3 stops. Anyway, going direct from Houston on Continental is fast and easy. They are using the smaller regional jets to do this. The downside is is costs almost $200.00 more than going via Mexico City from my location. I think I am going to do it again anyway this summer because it is so convenient. On the other hand, I have changed planes many times in Mexico City, it is certainly doable, a bit more time and a bit more hassle, but no big deal.

Topping to get more ways to get to Oaxaca, I hope.

I have also taken the little Continental jet to Oaxaca from Houston, originating in DC. Fast and easy. The flight from DC left at the crack of dawn, but I was in Oaxaca in time for lunch. You should be able to find a similar flight originating in Newark. Unfortunately, when I went last year, I didn't really comparison shop, because I left Mexico from a different city (Puerto Vallarta) and Continental seemed so convenient.

That said, I would certainly look into arranging a long layover in Mexico City if you have the time.

Question - what is the general, um, mood in Oaxaca lately? I am very eager to return. Also, where are you staying?

From what I gather , things are fine in Oaxaca - but I only know what I read on blogs and travel forums.
We are staying at Parador San Miguel, which is supposed to be a great place at a good value.
