Advice on Guadalajara

We'll be in Guadalajara in mid January. What suggestions does anyone have regarding restaurants, sights, places to see--or not see, day trips. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There's a great town 10 minutes from downtown called Tlaquepaque, it's where the artist show there works of art, pottery to stone work, alot of great shops for shopping for local art and good eateries.
House of the artisans in Guadalajara is fun to see art work of all kinds from that area.
I have not been there for 5 yrs but am going the 18th of this month to Tlaquepaque and we are staying in a B&B.

There is a lot to do here in Guadalajara. You must see Centro where the cathedral, Governor's Palace, etc. is located. The Mercado Libertad is close-by; it is a huge market with just about anything you could want to buy. You should see the Folkloric Ballet at the Teatro Degollado which is held every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Tlaquepaque is a must see. Tonala is an arts and crafts village that is much more authentic, and reasonably priced. There is an outdoor market on Thursdays and Sundays which is interesting to see. Guadalajara has a nice new zoo. You can make a day trip to Tequila and visit a tequila distillery. You could also visit the Lake Chapala/Ajijic area where there are a lot of US and Canadian retirees. There are also tons of good restaurants here (Destileria, Guadalajara Grill, Si Como No, Ma Come No, La Pianola, El Convento, Jacarandas). Have a great time. There is no shortage of things to do.

This is more a question than an answer. Does anyone have ideas about accomodation in Guadalajara for about a month in order to take an intensive Spanish course. Also, what would be the best month or months to visit?

Many thanks LuAnn for your suggestions. We'll be at the Fiesta Americana from Jan 14 to the 22. I'll let you know how much we enjoyed it. Although we've been to Mexico about a dozen times, this is our first non-sea cost trip since Mexico City before the earthquake.
Gracias
