I suggest you take a look at Orbitz, Travelocity and BestDay, they all offer competitive rates. 1100 range for a week? for a day? The rule of thumb is the more you pay, the better it is. Some are better just because they are closer to the night life, but still better for a reason.
The center of the night life is on KM 9, so the closer you are to KM 9, the closer you will be to the night life

Exactly what type of AI resort are you looking for? Couples, family, adult only, party place?
Some of the beaches in Cancun are eroded, so check carefully.
I would also suggest looking at beachdestinations.com or cheapcaribbean.com Once you provide us with the type of AI resort your looking for we can better recommend a specific hotel.

The Royal Cancun, Sun Palace, Golden Parnassus Resort and Spa, Le Blanc Spa Resort, Excellence Playa Mujeres.
The Royal is about mid-way in the hotel zone. They have had problems in the past with their beach being eroded. It may have been fixed by now.
Sun Palace is closest to the airport. It has recently gone under renovations in the past couple of years.
The Golden Parnassus is also about mid-way along the hotel zone. It doesn't get great reviews and will probably come in closer to the $1,100 you're looking for. Their pool does not have a swim-up bar, which is one of my priorites.
Don't know much about Le Blanc, but lots of people like it.
Excellence Playa Mujeres gets the best reviews. It's 45 minutes from the hotel zone. Too far from the action for my taste.

Well, I will bump this up as I am looking also for a Cancun AI for September. My DH and I are not looking for nightlife. We want to stay in the resort most of the time and just relax and have some great meals and drinks for 5 nights. We are late 50's. We loved Riu Palace Las Americas but want to try a new place. It doesnt have to be all adult as I think kids won't be a big issue after school starts. I am currently looking at Crown Palace as they seem to have a lot of restaurants and get good reviews. Any suggestions?? Thanks.
