Acapolco - past it's prime?

What is Acapolco like? I hear conflicting stories. Would you recommend Cancun or the Mayan Riviera over Acapolco (in July)?

I like Acapulco, and there are some new hotels that are definitely NOT past their prime. Acapulco also has some interesting history behind it, and some unique features -- like the cliff divers at La Quebrada.

For most folks though, I'd say that Cancun and the Maya Riviera are better choices. The beaches along the Caribbean coast are better, the water cleaner, better variety of hotels, etc.

Still, I love Acapulco too. Certainly the nightlife and restaurants are better in Acapulco, and nowadays it caters to a more Mexican and latin marketplace, which gives the whole area a different feel and a different beat.

Have fun!

I agree fully with TioGringo.

I have been to Cancun and Mayan Riviera and to Acapulco and if I had to go in July I would go to Acapulco.

It just has more Mexican charm .

I've been to both Acapulco and Cancun and they attract different types of Mexico-bound tourists. Aca is older, more authentically "Mexican" and the Pacific is colder and rougher than the Carribbean. Cancun is newer, very Americanized and has white sand beaches and a somewhat calmer surf. I prefer the city and resorts of Aca, but I like the beaches of Cancun better.

I am a big fan of the Mex. riviera. Acapulco, however has a beautiful bay and is among the highest when it comes to average days of sunshine in the entire world.
