We've been several times and just love it - we've been to gorgeous areas and seen active volcanoes, waterfalls, and amazing wildlife like monkeys, macaws, and toucans. Some roads are in great shape like the one between SJO and Arenal and some are super bumpy like going to Monteverde. Most everyone we know who has gone can't wait to go back. We hire private drivers and that works well for us. If you're adventurous, you can definitely drive it.
