5th Ave Construction, Playa Del Carmen
I've been reading a lot of threads about 5th Ave. in PDC being under construction. Sounds like it's a little difficult (and confusing) to get around. How bad is it, and how long is it supposed to last? I'll be there the last week in June (never been) and don't want to miss out on good restaurants and shopping - sounds like a lot of people missed portions of the town because it looked like the road ended but really didn't!

We just returned from there two weeks ago, and it wasn't really that bad.
They are completely redoing the entire road, and other than having to pick our way around, and the taxis having to drop us off a half block from where they normally would, I didn't think it was that big a deal. Just leave the heels at home ;) |
Was it really loud eating outdoors at the restaurants near the construction?

5th Ave. is so long and has so many restaurants, it was easy to find one that was not anywhere near the construction.
During the week that we were there, the heavy digging (i.e. the loud stuff) moved from place to place, so we were able to eat at all of the spots we had chosen by looking to see if there was digging going on and avoiding that area. PDC is a laid back funky town, and most people seemed totally unfazed by the work that's being done. Just go and have a good time and don't worry about it - it's truly not that bad or disruptive. |
Aquarius 2678,
You will have a great time in PDC! Quite honestly, don't worry about the construction (we were just a little "sun drained" and "idiotic") that day. Basically, 5th avenue runs from the ferry dock all the way up. The portion we missed (until later) was beyond TGIF (4 blocks from the bus station (away from the ferry)) and nicely paved. Just head up from TGIF and keep on walking and you will hit additional restaurants and shopping. When we were there it just looked like it ended because of the "small stacks of bricks". It is really a neat place- I wish we would have had more time to visit! I hope you have a wonderful time! If you decide to try Yaxche (which we enjoyed) there is a back patio area which seemed nice. Somehow we missed that too but the food was wonderful!! (= As far as 5th avenue, I noticed by the time we left the shops were sweeping the gravel and it was just dusty. I think we hit it when it had "larger pieces of rocks" on the road and pretty dusty. Have a blast! |
One more thing, we stayed on one of the streets directly off 5th avenue from the construction and each day we were there we did not hear anything. The additional restaurants on 5th avenue seemed to be even farther from the construction and quiet!
