Ok, so I'm realizing I really need to plan this now, as we're traveling during school break and lots of places are already booked for February. Korrigan looks really nice, but not available. Wondering if you know anything about Geckoes? It gets great reviews, but is pricey for that area. Just wondering if it's worth it. It does look like Cocles beach might be too rough for swimming? thanks!

I agree with Hip on almost everything, but wouldn't take a 4 year old to Bosque. . .when I am there, I don't want anything or anyone keeping me from my own selfish agenda! It costs too much to not be able to "do it" in its entirety.

Tortuguero. . .again, agreeing with hip as it is one of our favorite places, too. Best time, though is when the turtles are nesting. . almost a religious experience to watch that process. Nice without it, but super special thing to see.

Big on Puerto Viejo, also. We like Azania Bungalows, and that pool is good for little ones. Your entire family would enjoy Jaguar Rescue Center and also the Sloth Rescue Center up near Cahuita (Aves del Caribe). Both are absolutely awesome.

Good luck and enjoy!

shillmac -- That's a good point about bosque. I guess I was thinking more about if the 4 year old would have a good time. Ha!

mad -- I really think you should consider staying at a place with a pool. I can't stress enough how much it comes in handy when it gets dark by 6. I know you're aware of this, and it's not your first trip...just a reminder. As shillmac said Azania is a good choice, individual bungalows and pool and restaurant on site. If that's full there is Cariblue next door. I don't know too much about Geckoes. I've heard of it and they are a regular on Trip Advisor but I've never seen it.

Ok, thanks Shillmac and Hip. BTW, Shillmac you've helped with my other trips in the past and have been so helpful- thanks! I think we've ruled Bosque out at this point anyway. We have been before so I think we'd be ok if we missed some stuff, but it's too pricey to bring our son. Am going a little crazy with figuring out Puerto Viejo lodging. Cariblue prices have gotten really steep for what they offer. I don't mind $200 a night, but not close to $300 for rustic lodging. I'll look at Azania again- the beach there is swimmable? What are your thoughts on Shawanda- looks nice and they have a pool? If we have a car is it easy to get from one beach to another- don't think we want much more than a 10-15 min. drive in case we need to go back for something (you never know with a little guy!) thanks again.

Cariblue is $300 a night? Wow. No way. Azania and Cariblue are at Cocles. The beach is swimmable during the year and surfable others so it's hard to predict. We just rode our bikes (they have, or had, them at Azania) to Punta Uva and used the pool early morn and late eve.

This might help:

oops sorry, confused with another place. Cariblue seems to be booked during the time we want to go, but something tells me there's something wrong with their online reservations. would you do azania over cariblue?

Our family loved Banana Azul, has a pool, great food. My kids were preteens tho.
Deb15July...after 2 fabulous CR trips, we tried Belize last Christmas. Wonderful, we did Caye Caulker and loved it. Although my heart is in CR, the snorkling in Belize will bring me back for sure. ATM cave is astounding. Highly recommend Black Rock Lodge.

my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info 4explore...I think we've decided against snorkeling for this trip, but ATM and Tikal are at the top of the list. Black Rock Lodge is an option, but still doing comparisons of locations in the Cayo.

I wish we could stay at Banana Azul, but it's 16 years old and up. After looking at all the options in Puerto Viejo I finally decided on a relatively new property, El Nido Cabinas. They have A/C and a pool and are near a supposedly calm beach. There are only four cabinas and they look really nice. A bit on the expensive side for the area, but since we're with a young child I'd prefer a few more amenities. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks for all your help.
