Where to stay first night Costa Rica before heading to Dominical
So, I'm finally booked for next February-two whole weeks in Cost Rica-YES!!!
I'm looking for a new place to stay the first night, within 45 minutes of the airport in San Jose, before heading down south. I have stayed at Xandari and Vista del Valle, and loved them both for very different reasons. Can anyone suggest something different? I prefer something lush, with lots of wildlife, great views, quiet, laid back, with a pool. Money COULD be no object if you do a good sales job on me......

Which route are you travelling...through Quepos or San Isidro de General? We're staying at the Orosi Lodge in the sweet mountain town of Orosi, famous for its colonial church. I don't think it's fancy or lush or that it even has a pool. But Tapanti National Park (gorgeous) is nearby. And there are thermal pools next door. We'll be here our first couple of nights before we head to Dominical.

I have stayed at villa caletas, mentioned above, twice - it is an excellent place to stay -would highly recommend. I would also stay at Finca Rosa Blanca again in a heartbeat - what a beautiful, well designed place - great pool, great bird watching, nice views, family style dinner (on small scale) - can't say enough about it....it is truly one of a kind....there are pics of it posted at the end of my trip report last year....these are definitely 2 of my favorite places....a little $$...

Thanks fellow fodorites! I have actually stayed at Villa Caletas, maybe 10 years ago or so, and did love it. So, I want to try something new.
Cimbrone, we are flying out the next morning, so will probably want something closer, but will check out Orosi Lodge for future trips.
Steph, Finca Rosa Blanca was definitely on my radar! I have heard wonderful things about this place, it has been described as "magical", which appeals to me in a great way. There's just something about that first night, that sweet introduction to Costa Rica, so I may be willing to splurge.
Can you tell me which room you stayed in? There is such a selection, and they ALL look fabulous. I will check out the pics on your trip report. How far is it from the airport? Are there walking trails on the property?

They are at the end of the CR 2006 set. We stayed in the "mask" room and we were a walk-in - got their last room actually. My spanish is not the best but it was the "mascaras" room (like mascara i think??) It was perfect for us because I have a mask collection!

ok- i was too pooped to figure out which ones were not in my set so I just added to my aperture set and downloaded them again...soooo when you check out the sets, it's the CR 2006 set that has the frog as the first pic (like 150 photos ) I didn't label the new set but you'll probably be able to figure out which ones are from Finca....anything with interesting woodwork, little indians and fidel's, the pool, dinner table, view from room thru window, etc.....i wish we had more time there... The main door just fascinated me....it doesn't take much but what a great piece of wood for a door!
