3 Great Restaurants on Ambergris
 

Hi there,
I keep seeing posts for the Capricorn restaurant.. where is it? And other than Blue Water Grill and Fido's, I am looking for 3 great restaurants in Ambergris for our honeymoon.

Thanks so much we leave July 10th.

We returned from Ambergris about a week ago. Capricorn is north of the cut, meaning if you go at the regular dinner hour, you'll have to take a water taxi. I believe the hand ferry quits running about 8pm.

In San Pedro, I'd recommend Caliente. I had a wonderful Brazilian shrimp dish, can't recall the name, but it was excellent.

We also at at Elvi's Kitchen. In fact twice, the first time was just ok, but we returned with a friend and they cooked the fish my husband had caught that day. That meal was very, very good.

JamBel Jerk Pit is good, but way more casual than the above. That's tough to do, get more casual in San Pedro.

Jade Garden, El Divino and Jerry's Crab Shack have gotten good reviews lately, but we didn't make it to any of them.

And if you're around Sunday at noon, don't miss the beach barbecue at B.C.'s. Great fun, and good food at decent prices.

Blue Water Grill (at SunBreeze -- coconut shrimp are fantastic)
Papi's (local place but really good, behind Seven Seas)
Rendezvous (French-Thai fusion, on North Ambergris, near Journey's End)
Taste of Thai (just opened)
Cafe Picasso (tapas and pasta)
Mambo (at Mata Chica)

It's difficult to pick the absolute three best, but I'd say most people would pick three of these five:

Capricorn
Caliente
Blue Water Grill
Elvi's
Mambo

Also, would you advise doing a spa treatment at the Maruba Jungle Lodge? IS it worth it to checkout?

Save Capricorn for a special night. It was awesome! The restaurant provided a boat to and from the dock in front of our hotel. The food at Caliente was great. Don't bother with Mambo; we had to pay for transportation which was one hour late, the food was way overpriced and it quite a jaunt from San Pedro. Have fun!

I'm not a big fan of Maruba, but I know a lot of people who have really enjoyed it.

Just to update this: I was up at Mata Chica a few days ago. They have changed their restaurant menu some, and I have gotten several recent reports from folks who enjoyed it. They have a lunch deal where you get lunch, a drink, a spa massage and a boat ride back and forth for a set fee -- something like US$120 as I recall.

But Capricorn is still usually considered the best on the island.

Casa Picasso, Blue Water Grill and Caliente all get lots of positive comments. El Devino at Banana Beach also, as well as the old fave, Elvi's. Taste of Thai, a new place, has positive early reviews for the food, though service is reported to be a bit off as yet. Papi's and Jam-Bel are still good not very expensive places. Sweet Basil, too.

Victoria House has a new award-winning chef, and Portofino has good food as well. Cayo Espanto isn't open to the public for dining, but the chefs there do a fine job.

The restaurant at Victoria House (take a taxi south about a 10 minute trip, upscale, classiest place on the island, really great food)
