This info is from Jan 2011 - Roxy's email [email protected]. Back in 2011 she lived at the Tikal Inn and offered 2 types of tours: SUNSET (starting at 3:30 pm) and SUNRISE (starting at 4:30 am).

She also offered to take us to some other ruins not too far from Tikal; unfortunately we didn't have time to make that trip. She can arrange the transfers (I had it done in advance, so also don't know if her prices are good).

Hi, I live in Guatemala City and I'm a Guatemalan, I travel a lot (I'm actually in Germany right now) so I think I might help you. So you will be staying for 2 or 3 weeks in Guatemala and for my 18 years of life in this world I can tell you this: Don't skip Guatemala City, but try to stay in this zones: zone 16, 10, 14, 9, 1 and 4. Ik Guate you can stay for 2 days and visit The Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, the Catedral Metropolitana and parque central (Central Park) those three are basically one aside the other. There you have also la "Sexta Avenida" (sixth avenue) which is a pedestrian only street, with a lot of restaurants and coffee shops... Then move through Avenida la Reforma and Avenida Las Americas which are 2 avenues with a lot of sculptures and statues in the middle, and also beautiful gardens. In the city you should move using the Transmetro, which works like the Metro in any city, but it is a bus (that is very safe). You should stay in a hotel in zone ten which is like staying anywhere in USA, there you can go shopping... (Plaza Fontabella and Oakland Mall). In zone 16 there is Paseo Cayala which is a Private City based on European cities, it's inmense and beautiful. Go to the museums in zone 13 (those are near the Airport). Use yellow cabs those are safer but you have to call them, in the hotel always have the numbers for that. Guate City is dangeurous in very selected areas, the places I mentioned are safe (always take precautions) for example I've never been robbed! :) (I'd live Guate for the end). Go to Antigua and stay about 3 days there; if you rent a car is quite easy to go there, but a Shuttle would be better for you or a taxi. I wouldn't use "chicken buses" those are unsafe because the drivers drive TOO fast and sometimes they are assaulted by robbers, and they are always unconforttable (but they are VERY cheap). Then go to Atitlan, and move throught the villages there. You might need also 3 days there. To go to Tikal is easier to fly to Peten from Guate City but if you are going on road you should take a shuttle (I dont know the itineraries). Or rent a car to go there, it's easy but a long journey, the good thing is that you'll see throught the road some AMAZING views from the mountain road (don't drive it at night). In Peten you have to visit Flores and Tikal mainly, a recommendation I always give is to stay inside the park in Tikal; it is a WONDERFUL experience, amd obviously get up to see the sunrise. You can also go to Semuc Champey or to el Biotopo del Quetzal which are on the road to Coban. (search all the names of places in Google so you can see pictures). Then you also might want to visit Xela which is in the highlands and is the second largest city in Guatemala. Río Dulce, Lake Izabal and Livingston are also places you should consider. A last advice: Pay attention to the climate, in January the temperature tends to go down to 5 degrees Celcius in almost all of the high lands including Guate City and Antigua which go down to 8 degrees. In Xela might go below zero during the night and in the morning. (Cold weather in Guatemala is only at night) during the day it's normaly at 20 degrees. Peten is usually very very hot. Don't take the gun and just be a smart traveller, I was robbed once in Barcelona but never in Guatemala, so dont feel too nervous about that. Also contact tour operators for more accurate information and also if you want to hike any of the more than 30 volcanoes in Guatemala, I recommend Pacaya. Also search for La Reunion golf and resort, it is near antigua. (SORRY FOR THE LENGTH HAHA)
