1 month in Buenos Aires?

Hello, all!

I am considering spending 1 month in Buenos Aires. Someone commented over on the Thorn Tree (Lonely Planet) forums that 1 month is too much for BA, and that I should see more of the country.

I don't know if I'll have enough money to do lots of traveling, though! Should I shorten my trip, instead?

My very preliminary gameplan was to spend March '08 in Buenos Aires, with 2 days at Iguazzu Falls and 2 days at Estancia Dos Hermanos. The rest would all be in BA. Will I be bored??

We were here (BA) for 2 weeks last Oct/Nov and we did not do half of what we had planned to do.
The city is huge, there is so much to see, there will be days that just sitting in a park and walking will take up the day and you will find that time flew...
I like your schedule, you can also take the ferry to Colonia and get out of the city and see that city :)
I live here now, I absolutely love Buenos Aires and I don't think a month is too long at all. You will just be getting into the groove of things and it will be time to leave :)

It really depends on you, your expectations, what you like to do and in general how Buenos Aires "grabs you." The majority of people seem to find they didn't have enough time and just kept finding new things to keep them interested. But you sometimes read the trip reports of those that were there for 3 days "saw it all - did it all in 2 and then were bored"..

If you dont already speak Spanish or if you want to improve, consider enrolling in some sort of Spanish classes. it could also be a way to help you meet people or make contacts.

I spent a month there last year. here is a link to my trip report.

I presonally was not at all bored and want to go back. To me bs As is a fascinating, vibrant city.

We just returned yesterday after spending 5 plus weeks in BA. We only "left" the city once to visit Tigre for the day. We did not get bored; we found plenty of things and new destinations each day, but then our mode of travel is very, very leisurely. We walked, took the subte, buses, and explored neigborhoods and revisited places that interested us. For us, five weeks worked fine. When, I get the energy; I'll write more. It was great not dealing with jet lag on this trip, but the time spent in airplanes and airports from So. Calif. is exhausting.

Hello imelda72:

On our first trip to Argentina some 11 or 12 years ago we spend much of our two months in Bs. As. with many side trips, all very much enjoyed.

On our last trip. 9 weeks in Chile and Argentina we spent 4 weeks in Bs. As. and were never bored.

Like previous posts, it really depends on what your interests are. Remember, Bs. As. is a city of many millions of people so there are many varried things of interest.

We too like a liesurly visit when we go to warmer places for our winters. Therefore our pace is not rushed and we take time to have a good look where ever we are.

Argentina and Bs. As. in particular have very advantageous prices at this time in their economy. The best steaks are as cheap as a hamberger could cost in North America! We have always found the people to be friendly, polite and easy to be with. Certainly you will find bad ones in any place but overall, Bs. As. is great.

We are now making arrangements for our third visit there, again to spend a considerable time in the city.

Day trips would be a good option as well.

Have a great trip.

Woodie

Thank you for your responses!

Raquel, I do plan on taking Spanish classes, so that's a good reason to stay in the city for 4 weeks. I look forward to reading your trip report (if I haven't already).

Scarlett, I love reading all about your adventures in BA, and what you said is exactly what I'm hoping for--getting into the groove of things, and wanting more time when I leave! That's always a good sign.

I had come down on short vacations and always felt like I didn't see much. I came down 2-1/2 years ago planning to spend 6-8 weeks... and I'm still here and have yet to get bored! Unless you're a person who doesn't like exploring cities, theater, music, art, etc., I'd say that a month will feel like too short of a time here, you'll be glad you gave it at least that.
