@ CounterClifton: Understood. I can still do without an edit feature. At least I'll now chuckle each time a see someone say that want it -- even if they quite understandably just want to correct one of those silly auto-corrects that drive us all nuts.

Thank you for the update re: spam Fodor Team.

I clicked on that link though, and I hate that format

It's not about being resistant to change. It's just a format I find clunky and hard to find information.

I hate other formats too though, and when I do, I stop going there. Bitter Kittens is one such site. Basically, if I can't easily find information and follow threads, I am simply not going to work that hard at it and will move on.

Easy enough to get rid of autocorrect. Just turn it off. Almost the first thing I do when I get a new iPad. It will still highlight things it thinks are wrong, but you get to choose how and whether to correct.

"I hope you can turn off the email notification! My inbox would be overwhelmed and I currently find them with no difficulty from my profile."

Thrusdaysd, How do you find email addresses from your profile? The only way I've seen Fodorite's email addresses is if they specifically post them in the discussion.

"Most of the "reviews" on travel sites have been outsourced for many years, because many "real" travelers don't take the time to write genuine reviews "

Fuzzbucket, can you perhaps provide a few links, e.g. on tripadvisor, where this is the case. I of course am suspicious of the "one-post wonders" or numerous single sentence reviews with identical syntax:clearly an attempt , as you say, to essentially advertise a place and raise its ranking. However, the vast majority of reviews for places I'm interested in are detailed and appear legitimate. Thanks.

@CaliNurse - I am talking about emails that alert you to activity on threads that you are following, not emails to/from a particular person (that is PM, not notification).

I will be very sorry to see this format go, too, though I do realize change is part of life and I will probably end up adjusting. The Flyer talk boards are clunky and overwhelming to navigate, and I don't look forward to the change. Still, I was an active member of the AOL boards way back when in prehistoric times, and had a heck of an adjustment transitioning to Fodors at first! But then there was no looking back.

What I've come to appreciate is the chance to see posts about areas or regions I hadn't considered (I know others have commented on this) and discover somewhere else that I might visit. Or just learn about a new place.

I welcome the ability to message someone. While I don't use it heavily, there are time I've messaged someone on TA and gotten some good feedback on things that really aren't necessary to share in a larger forum.

Yes, I like the idea of an edit function - and no, I'm not publishing nasty posts about others, only to regret it soon after! Sometimes I just want to correct something but more likely, I realize I want to add something to something I've written.

Posting photos on the site may be nice, though not so important to me. But having a filter for the spam....priceless.

I've been on FlyerTalk for over a dozen years and it's facility is light years superior to the Fodor's board. It's really not difficult to navigate around but, as always, it has a lot more functionality so there's more than a simple 15 item drop down menu like here.

Lots of features and almost all can, if you don't like them, be easily disabled or turned off. That software puts the control of the forum in each user's hands. I just can't understand how people can object to an editing feature ... if you don't like it, don't use it!

This Fodors system has always seemed like a starter board for newbies. Little functionality and less control.

I don't know anyone who really hates modern boards such as FT. Y'all need to give it a chance and I'll guarantee eventually you will winder how you ever got around the Fodor's board at all.

Until last night, I wouldn't have seen any reason to argue against an edit function! I don't feel the need for it, but I hadn't seen any reason against it.

But now that I know how it can, and has (on other sites) been misused, I actually am decidedly against providing an edit function.

I'm pleased to say that I find the vast majority of Fodorites to be helpful and constructive, and I am in awe of the extraordinary generosity and kindness of most posters on Fodor's forums. That said, there are a few (thankfully, very few!) posters who can be, uh, less than fully gentle (read: a few, very few, can be astonishingly vicious). IMO, anything that would increase the frequency of rude or insulting discourse would be unwelcome.

I would like to believe that the number of people who would post cruel comments, just to delete them once seen by the "target" and before seen by the moderators, would be exceedingly small -- but frankly, even a small increase in preventable meanness is greater than I would prefer.

My bottom line: I would dislike any change to our functionalities that would permit a malicious use of an edit function, no matter how rare.

Honestly, as infrequent as it it, we are still subject to attack from others too often. No reason to make it easier for that to happen.

Modern? Now that's funny. That format has been around since the 80's and is terribly dated. All that so-called functionality comes at the price of an ugly, cluttered and convoluted user interface. Which is not to say that this one is great. It's just prettier.

Modern?...terribly dated.

Yup.

There IS a lot to be said for purpose-specific minimalism that I think goes underappreciated in the part of the tech world that's still clinging to a time before smart devices, apps and social media.

The blog software that Fodors pulled from is a mid-90s era peer to sort of look VBulletin is based on. VB.... or PunBB or any other others that may have some variations in functionality and better or worse backends but pretty much look and navigate extremely similar... have been around a very long time. Some would argue there's a reason for that. And there is, from an admin standpoint. Development's done, staff already knows how to maintain a PHP based board and backup the SQL (usually mySQL) database. It's as stable as a rotary phone.

But it isn't leading edge tech. No one has developed new tech on this kind of look in 20 years. There's a reason your Apple file system, your Android mobile contact lists, your Facebook feed and your Google search results don't have a look and feel like a 90's PHP forum.

Interesting point. Suggests to me that the forum as an information sharing method may be done, or at the very least destined to fade away. There's Reddit, otoh...

CaliNurse - can't provide links to specific businesses on TA or any other forum, because virtually all businesses which offer reviews on the internet are involved with this to some degree.

There are companies who hire freelance writers - it's the dirty little secret that has come out into the open.

Many of these companies use outsourced employees, based in other countries, and who are told to follow boilerplate scripts to the letter - which is why they can seem so detailed and genuine. These reviews are normally very enthusiastic and use a lot of exclamation points.

If the owner prefers to hire local freelance writers, he has much more control over the content, and can change it according to the seasons, etc. If the writer goes "off script" and gets too creative, the owner could risk a lawsuit.

Noooo, not the dreaded FlyerTalk format. I don't know if I will be able to overcome the format and continue with Fodors. So disappointed to hear this.

May give me the incentive to leave.
I find rate of deletion increasing and rate of interesting threads decreasing.
Maybe I am just bored and am becoming a bore.
