Zurich to Munich by train

Hi,

I'm looking to help my niece's here. They want to visit Munich for 2 days (1 overnight), departing from and returning to Zurich in late March. Curious how long the trip is and approx. cost. During their week stay in Switzerland, they'll be using an 8 day Swiss Pass (2nd class youth pass) for transportation. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions for reasonable accomodations in close proximity to the Munich train station?

Paul

The trip will take a little over 4 hours. I just checked on bahn.de and there is a special rate of 49€ one way if you purchase in advance. I have stayed at the same hotel in Munich since 1983. It is directly across the street from the main station, Hotelissimo Haberstock. price about 99-109€ per night for a twin room in late March. I actually checked the dates of March 25-27.

There are 5 theoretically direct trains daily, Zurich dp 7.16, 9.16, 11.16, 13.16, 18.16 (4 hrs 12 min journey). Due to works on the Austrian leg, you will have to change to a bus for the St. Margrethen - Bregenz leg, however. The standard round trip fare for Swiss Pass holders is 92 CHF resp 75 EUR
http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en
Discounted fares (from St. Margrethen/Swiss border to Munich) start at 19 EUR

There is also a bus, leaving Zurich at 6.00, 10.00, 13.00, 19.00 (4 hrs 45 min journey, different timetables on weekends). Fares start at 15 EUR one way.

Usually you need to purchase from the departing country if you are buying online. Many require you pick up your ticket at the station (they give you a code to pick up with).

check out these fantastic sites IMO about Swiss trains and passes: www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.
