Zurich to Bucharest?
 

What is the best way to get to Bucharest from Zurich? We'd like to fly but all the flights seem high.

If you're trying to move house, then drive a van there. The drive, through Austria and Hungary, is easy, though this is one of Europe's major trade arteries (it's the basic route from Turkey to Western Europe), so it's very congested with lorries.

If you want to get there quickly, then pay the going rate and fly. There are no discount airlines operating out of Romania, though Sky Europe will get you to Budapest, whence there is a (relatively slow) train to Bucharest. But if you want to save money, get the bus.

You'll probably get the best plane rates by using the Swiss sister site to www.ebookers.com (click on the Swiss flag). Changing at Budapest or Milan, you can probably get a return ticket for about CHF450, incl tax.

For the bus (36 hours, about CHF250 return) www.eurolines.com. Again select the Swiss flag .

Actually, you can find on whichbudget.com that Volareweb.com operates five times weekly service from Venice from 64.81 euro; And Helvetic operates ZRH-VCE from 123 euro.

I didn't check into how well the times would connect.

A train with 4 berth and 6 berth couchettes goes from Zurich at 2309 and to Venice Mestre at 0725 and Venice Santa kucia at 0736. From there busses taked an hour to the airport. Volare http://www.volareweb.com/ fly from Venice Marco Polo at 1140 to Bucharest at 1420 for 70 euros.
