Zurich Reasonable Accommodation
 

We will be in Zurich just one night prior to our departure back to the U.S. in April. We could use taxi, train or other public transportation to the airport. We plan to play the day before in the city (probably go to Sprengli for chocolate)so we just need a place to stay that is nice but not too expensive ($150 tops- I know that may be asking a lot in Zurich). Thanks for your help.

I have stayed at the Pension St. Josef three times. It is not far from the bahnhof, has comfortable rooms and a friendly staff.

There is overnight lodging inside the Zurich airport. Go to www.zurich-airport.com and go to your services and then day rooms. The cost for a double overnight stay is 100CHF (about $80). Have a Nice Trip!!! Mike

I will shortly be staying at the Best Western Hotel Montana. I got my rate of $123 a night through orbitz (a bit less than the St. Josef). While I haven't stayed there yet, it did come recommended by a fodorite.

We had a nice family room at Hotel Bristol, also a short walk from the Bahnhof. The train is your best and least expensive way to the airport.

We're staying our last night in Zurich at the end of May and I booked a room on Priceline -- got the 4* Intercontinental for $91.00. Sure it's not downtown, but you could taxi back & forth for the difference. ((b))

We've stayed in the Zuercherhof, a Best Western, in the old town on the left side of the river. It's nice, has a good location not far from the main train station and is fairly reasonable. Check the website for Best Western hotels in Zuerich.

There are a bunch of airport hotels, Hilton, etc.
Do your homework. Check out Orbits, Expedia and the regular hotel chains that have airport accommodations. Most hotels have transport to city centers.

Well a taxi is going to cost you between US$60-80 one way, so if you are willing to instead put about another US$40-50 toward a hotel room and take the train (US$4 or so per person) or a hotel shuttle (varying charges), you would be in the CHF250-265 range for hotels, which would give you a better ange of hotels in nicer locations in the old town, IMO. If your one night is over a weekend, you will find even better rates.

In order of charm and location, in my personal order of preference, look at the ones below. The lfirst two are completely charming and in very lovely parts of the old town, the third is more of a 3 star but is in a fun part of the old town on the right bank, the last four are good hotels and are within a few hundred yards of a train station:

Otherwsie, the hotels above seem fine to me.

IMO the best chocolate is from Teuscher, go to www.teuscher.com. Spruengli/Lindt make better cakes than chocolates, IMO, but I guess it is a personal thing; their hot chocolate is very good. Teuscher have a several shops, including a great shop at 9 Storcengass in a very lovely part of the old town by the river and the Fraumunster Church (the one with teheChagall windows).
