Zurich in December 1-2 days
We are a mid-50's couple that enjoy staying in local, clean bed and breakfast with private bath not the large hotels. Can anyone suggest something. We do not know if we should spend 1 or 2 days here before heading to Basel for business.

Thanks for any help.

Becky

Becky hi: I am a Zurich resident, but not knowing about your budget, it's kind of difficult. There are small hotels in any price range.
What I suggest is the "Scheuble", newly renovated 3-star, close to the train station. Looks very nice now.
www.scheuble.ch
Don't miss the Christmas market in the main hall of the train station, the beautiful Christmas light at the Bahnhofstrasse and the nicely decorated shops all over.
Come back, if you need further info about hotels, etc.
You can also check out the webpage of Zurich Tourism at:
www.zurichtourism.ch

For the past few years, I have been staying at the Bristol during my short stopovers in Zurich, and have never been disappointed. very convenient location, too. Check it out at http://www.hotelbristol.ch/zimmer.html
On the other hand, for my next January 2002 stopover I am thinking of a change, e.g. something like Seehotel Meierhof at Horgen (with a very easy S-Bahn connection to town). Ursula: may I have your opinion please, about the latter option?
|
Eli hi:

Well, the Seehotel Meierhof in Horgen is known as a convention hotel right on the lake. Modern, and as you say, with an easy train connection to Zurich town.
I am not sure whether I would choose it though, because I would prefer to stay IN town somewhere. But is has a good reputation. Depends, what you are looking for.
www.seehotel-meierhof.ch

Isn't there a pretty little hotel just away from the city center recommended by Karen Brown for Zurich? I think Ursula mentioned in in another thread; maybe it starts with a T? (I'm a lot of help). Another thought is the little town of Dielsdorf just outside of Zurich towards Basel -- there's a pretty hotel there -- the Hotel Lowen, just in case you'd prefer to be in a smaller place. You could still spend the day in Zurich and maybe visit that little walled town, Regensberg, which is nearby. J.

jw: Maybe you are thinking of the "Ermitage am See" in Küsnacht. It's a Relais&Chateaux. Delightful place with a great restaurants on the lakeside. Very nice and romantic on a summer evening!
Fine, if somebody wants to splurge. But I don't suggest it, when people look for a B&B.
ww.ermitage.ch

Sorry, that should be

www.ermitage.ch

of course! Had a long working day!

Becky, jw, & Ursula
I think jw is referring to the Hotel Tiefenau, recommended by Karen Brown's guide & website.

Ursula, I absolutely **love** the Ermitage. I've had the pleasure of staying there twice -- latest last Aug. Great splurge. Great food. Lucky you!!

s
Quite right. The Tiefenau**** is an all time favourite of myself together with the Florhof***. BTW, both with excellent restaurants.
Thanks s

PS: Where is Becky?
|
Tiefenau! S, between this and Bill's thread, I'm really keeping you busy. You tactful people are thinking that they should never give teachers Thanksgiving week off. I'm overzealous when it comes to Switzerland. I hope Becky and her husband and Bill and his wife find little hotels of their dreams.

Hi and thank you to everyone replying to my message. I'm going to check out the websites and reread this info from print. What will the weather be in Zurich and Basel the middle of December? I am in Minnesota so we are used to winter. We were also thinking of spending a day in Friedberg Germany, just taking the train from Basel. How does that sound compared to your other responses?

Thanks again.

Becky
