Zurich hotels
Help! I will most likely be "stuck" in Zurich for a few days before connecting to Berlin. I am in need of a hotel near the airport that is relatively inexpensive.
In addition, are there any features of Zurich I shouldn't miss?

Hi Tracey. I don't know of any "budget" priced hotels near the airport. We stayed at the Hotel Welcome Inn once to catch an early flight. I opted for it because it is in the town of Kloten and reasonably close to the airport and we had to return a rental car. (I am not anxious to go back; the room was small, and it was so warm that we had to leave the window open. Street noise in the form of shouting and door banging about 2 AM was disturbing.)
Unless you are faced with returning a rental at the airport, I suggest you consider staying in town. The trains run frequently to the airport, so that it is no problem at all to get from one place to the other. I think you will be able to find lower priced places around the train station than you will in Kloten.
Fodors has several decent places on its list as far as I know.

I would suggest staying near the train station as trains leave for the airport every 20 minutes. In 1998, the fare from the Hauptbahnhof to the airport was 5.40 SF. We stayed at the Hotel Leonhard Zurich which was fine, we paid 175 SF for a double room with bath. It was just over the bridge from the train station. If you are going to be in Zurich for a few days, I would take the excellent Swiss Rail system and go to the Bernese Oberland. Stay in Murren for a night or two and enjoy the gorgeous Alpine scenery.

The Hotel Central, just across the river from the main train station is quite nice. It is a 4 star so a bit on the expensive side. Has a great piano bar and it is very popular. Nice rooms and good location for down town Zurich. It is also very interesting in that this was the hotel of choice of all the "spooks" of the CIA, KGB, MI5, etc during the cold war. They all hung out in the bar .. it is mentioned in many books, both factual and fictional, because of this "spook central" connection. I have stayed there many times and always enjoyed it a great deal.

Good afternoon, Tracy
I think Bill has the best idea and that
is staying at a hotel close to the
Bahnhof, The CENTRAL is just across
the river and within block of the
stations platforms. Another hotel
which is across the street from the
Central is the DU THEATRE, we used
this hotel many years ago, Since
and for many times have used the KINDLI
which is not within easy walking distance from the Bahnhof and about
a five minute cab ride.
Would suggest taking the morning city
tour which starts from the Travel Office
in the Bahnhof, excellant way of getting
the lay of the land, other features
are the Swiss Landes Museum, the Bahnhofstrasse, on it Franz Carl Weber
excellant toy store and the Sprungli
down by Paradeplatz. Also the boats on
Lake Zurich are good for a calm trip
over the lake, perhaps to Rapperswill
and have lunch there or on the boat
when it returns to Zurich...
see www.zhol.ch/----www.zsg.ch/-----
www.zw.ch/----www.zuerionline.ch/-----
www.zurichtourism.ch/-----www.zuerich.ch/, have a good time, if you need a couple of ristorante recommendations
drop me an e mail and will respond.
Richard of La Grange Park, Il..
