Zurich Hotel

I am looking for a comfortable 3 star hotel in Zurich. One with local color.

What is your budget? Zurich hotels can be expensive.

We stayed at Hotel Leoneck..
"cow" theme in the lobby, "swans" folded linen on the beds. Comfortable room - could hear the trams making a turn down below, but ok if windows were closed.
Get breakfast elsewhere or pay for full breakfast. The 'continental' was a coffee and a roll, nothing more.
We walked there from the main train station, last block was uphill but fine.

In January we sayed at Hotel Alstadt (http://www.hotel-altstadt.ch/cms/index.html)

Here's what I wrote about it:
We arrived at Alstadt Hotel. You walk in past the bar to a window when the receptionist/bartender gets your passport information and gives you the rundown on the hotel particulars and the key situation. We were given a top floor room with a pitched ceiling. The main room was large enough, comfy bed, TV and lots of shelf and cabinet space. A sliding door separates another room with a day bed, desk, more storage and shelf space and a small bathroom. Great shower. The price was 220CHF about $175. USD.

One thing about Zurich so far that has totally surprised me, LOTS of people smoke and they still smoke indoors. You can get a non-smoking room at the hotel but the entire hotel smells of cigarettes. Bars and restaurants still allow smoking inside and they’re not separated from the non-smokers.

The hotel is perfectly situated about a ˝ block from the water in the middle of the old city center.

Just in case you're interested in local color of a small-town sort, Bulach has a dandy town center, convenient to the flughafen, and easy trains into Zurich:

We stayed at the Hotel Adler in June. We were very pleased. It is is the center of the old town. Has everything you might need and is reasonable for Zurich. Check it out!

We stayed at the Hotel Adler just last Friday. We loved the ambience - but note that there was noise and music in the courtyard until 3 a.m. or later. I don't know if that was due to it being a Friday or something else, but it was pretty loud. Those in our group who did not stay on the courtyard side reported that things quieted down after midnight when the restaurant closed.

It's a wonderful hotel, but bring earplugs in case you encounter the noise we did!
