I stayed at the Gauer Schweizerhof Bern several years ago and it was terrific! Right across from the rail station, it's a 5-star boutique hotel. My room was quite large with all the amenities, and the most important thing, Fresh Flowers!!! Very warm and comfy.

In Zurich try the Central Hotel just across the river from the main train station, right on the edge of old town. Very nice hotel, 4 star, close to everything you need. Pleasant rooms, nice piano bar for evening fun. Good food as well.

Good evening, lucky
Sammy's suggestion of the Central is
an excellant one, it is a good hotel and
mostly a very good location just across
the bridge from the Bahnhof and running
south from the hotel is the old town
section on the Limmat east side.
We have always used the hotel KINDLI,
Pfalzgasse, 1 which is about three blocks further down on the west side
of the river at the foot of the Rennweb.
My suggestion for Bern would be the
METROPOLE Zeughausgasse. 29 which is
a three star with58 rooms and located just about two blocks south ot the Bahnhof. One very good reasonable ristorante in Bern is the Kornhauskeller
which is just about one block south of
the hotel. Richard of LaGrange Park, Il see www.swisshotels.ch for more
hotel information. rjv

Richard: I agree with your advice. Just one word about the "Kornhauskeller" in Berne: It has completely changed and has been turned into a very HIP, YOUNG and TRENDY place in the meantime. It is not anymore, what it was years ago. It is now rather a meeting place, esp. for younger people with a most trendy bar, lounge for chatts, trendy food, music, etc.
The old typical place for traditional Swiss food is gone. ;-)
.. and I know you like the "Kindli".

I like Eden au Lac on the Lake in Zurich. It's a small five star hotel. Old money type of place; popular for lunch and dinner with the (well-off) locals. I stayed there in July 2000 and we are going back this July. Ask for a room with a view of the lake. Eating breakfast (included in room rate) on the balconey is a real treat. I have looked into other hotls like zum Storchen, but I like this one the best and for Zurich it's quite reasonable. They have a website. It does not seem to be well-known by Americans; more of a European hotel.
