Zugspitze -- is there a way to judge conditions at the top remotely?

Hi All,

We will be driving from Munich to Mittenwald and thought that - weather-permitting -- we might stop in Garmisch first and go up the Zugspitze and/or Partnachklamm gorge.
Is there a way to check the weather at the top (whether there is good visibility) before we leave Munich in the morning? (e.g. a website?)

If the weather is cloudy, I was thinking the gorge would be a possibility.

Also, are there alternative routes of the Zugspitze that leave from sites closer to Mittenwald? It is my understanding that ascending from GP is just one of the ways to get there and that there are other options.

Thanks, in advance, for your input!

Laura

There's another cable car from Ehrwald on the other side of the mountain. It's about 20km by car from Garmisch but you'll be on the summit a little faster. Ehrwald is at 1000 meters altitide, Garmisch at 700m

My husband and son were there a couple of years ago. They waited until a clear day to go up, and my son went snowboarding. But after about an hour, all of a sudden the weather turned. It happened very quickly, and my son (and everyone else) had to quit snowboarding. So realize that sometimes even if the weather is clear one minute it changes quickly.
