Zugspitze - Germany

Has anybody gone to the top of the Zugspitze from the Austrian side? How does it compare to the German side?

We are planning to ride to the top of the zugspitze while enroute from Reutte, Austria to Munich. We could go into Garmish and take the tram/railway to the top there or we could take the one from Obermoos, Austria. It appears to be just as convinient logistically from either direction.

I am just wondering which would be a better choice.

The cable car ride is a bit awinspiring. As I recall it has only one or two anchor masts on the way up.

Other than that, you just won't be arriving at the highest mountain in Austria (they have higher ones) while it is the highest mountain on the German side. You can traverse from one to the other country up there.

Logistically, it is a better choice.

I agree. We took the cable car from the Austrian side. It is the way to go.

Since you are going to the same mountain top from either country and you will have to come back down the same way you went up to reclaim your car, I would determine the route I wanted to drive and use that to make my desision.

Get a good map and check out ways that you can get from Reutte to the Zugspitze and still get to see Wieskirche, Oberammergau, Linderhoff and the Ettal Monastary on the way.

You can probably do that poking around in viaMichelen.com

We've done the German side. Awesome. Took the cable car from the parking lot. Did the second car up, clear day. About $43 Euro each. Yes it is cold at the top. View from the cable car: http://www.thirdmansystems.com/vacat...ugspitze24.htm
Depart Reutte on B198, onto B179, onto B187, Road name changes to B23, Turn Right onto ST206 and follow the signs.

Thanks for the input. I looks like both are good choices, just a toss up based on what we want to do. We will probably choose the Austrian side since it seems like the tram a little less travelled :)

And don't worry - we've got good maps. I am the queen of maps and have been pouring over them, studying them, absorbing them into my soul - LOL.

It was while I was looking at a map of this area that I noticed the symbol for the tram/cable car on the Austrian side and said "hmmmm, that looks like a nice possibility, we will be driving right by there."

Then I looked it up online and saw that the trip up from the Austrian side is half the price as from the German side.
