Zimmer accommodation
 

Can anyone recommend B&B type accommodation for two nights in September in each of the following towns. We are looking to pay approximately 50 euro double per night.
REGENSBURG; BAMBERG; WEIMAR; DRESDEN; GORLITZ

What I do is go on the web and enter a "possible" site name on spec, with the German domain name "de". For example "www.regensburg.de". Then I follow any trails that lead to B&B accomm. It doesn't work for every place, but it works for nearly 80% of places that I've tried.

How nice that finally someone visits East Germany :) And even my two favourites - Dresden and Görlitz!

Since I am a Dresden resident I obviously don't stay overnight in a B&B or so, my recommendations base on experiences of friends.

Görlitz:
Pension "Zum 6. Gebot", centre of old town, quiet location. Tel (+49) 3581 411245, Double incl. breakfast 55 Euro

Dresden:
you will hardly find a B&B in the city centre in this price range. My recommendation is to stay in the outskirts, in a nice former winegrower's village (Niederpoyritz) near Pillnitz Palace and only 35 minutes by bus/tram to the city centre.

It is unfortunately a little more expensive, but very charming. Double incl. breakfast 65 Euro

Nice is also the B&B Landhaus Maria am Blauen Wunder (right by the Blue Wonder bridge), double incl. breakfast ca. 60 Euro

Another choice is Pension Lorenz, in the western outskirts, ca. 25 minutes to the city centre. Not sure about public transportation, though. 55 Euro per night and double incl. breakfast.

Thankyou for the very useful accommodation. I will certainly follow through on the suggestions.
perhaps you may comment on the fact that we are going to spend two nights in each of the towns listed, and this means that we only have two days for Dresden and/or Gorlitz. Would it be wise to miss one of the other towns?
After Dresden and/or Gorlitz we travel to Berlin for three days and then on to Matzlow where we have hired a "pennichette" for a week between Matzlow and Furstenberg

2 nights for Dresden and/or Görlitz? Ooops, this is definitely not enough.

It is hard, though, to advise you which place to skip. Maybe Weimar, if you are not a Goethe/Schiller fanatic :) I enjoyed Bamberg and Regensburg too much myself to recommend against these.

I am wondering, though, why you are staying for a full week in Matzlow. What to do there? Just relaxing?

Good question Ingo. We are arriving in Matzlow and have hired a self drive canal barge for a week. We travel between Matzlow and Furstenberg. Sorry about the confusion.
If you feel that by missing Weimar we will gain greater enjoyment from an extra two days in Dresden and Gorlitz, then we will seriously consider it. If we do that we would prefer to stay in one location for the four nights and use the local transport to visit the area.What do you think?

Now that makes sense with Matzlow - Fürstenberg. Nice.

It is an excellent idea to stay four nights in the Dresden area and do day trips from here. So you can also enjoy the evenings in the city with open air concerts, sitting in a beer garden by the river and watching the lit up "skyline" (which is since a few days complete again - the Frauenkirche was crowned with orb and cross. yahoo!) or sipping a glass of local wine ...

You should seriously consider - beside the day trip to Görlitz - a day in Meissen and/or a day in the fascinating National Park southeast of Dresden (bizarre sandstone rock formations, flat-top mountains, castles, picturesque villages ...). So many things to do, so little time :)

Can you advise what ballet or concert is on in Berlin 17th, 18th or 19th September

I checked the website for Berlin. Indeed very confusing, in German as well.

The Staatsoper schedule is not available yet for Sept.

Komische Oper: the only interesting performance is the opera "The Barber of Sevilla" (Rossini).

Philharmonic orchestra: All three evenings a concert with works of Claude Debussy, conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

Deutsche Oper:
17: "Carmen" (Bizet)
18: a ballet, not out yet which
19: "Il Trovatore" (Verdi)

For Dresden: most schedules are not out yet. I could only get information for the Semper Opera:
13 and 14 Sept: Symphonic concert, don't know which works
15: "Don Carlo" (Verdi)
16: Jazz at the opera

Thanks Ingo. You have given me some great leads. I will check out the specific websites. We are really keen to see at least one "show" in both Dresden and Berlin.
Sipping the local wine also sounds fantastic. We must look carefully at where we choose to stay, as enjoying the cuisine and wine of the location is high on our list of priorities
