Zermatt to Bellagio
Hello all,
I found an old post (2003) from davieeng asking for a quicker public transport route from Zermatt to Lake Como. The only route he knew of was via Train from Zermatt --> Brig --> Milan --> Como. Poster Mathias replied that there was no quicker route, but a more scenic one if he left the Milano-bound train at Domodossola. From there he should catch the narrow gauge train to Locarno. It was suggested that this was a very scenic 2-hour trip and then from Locarno he could head to Bellinzona and change trains to get to Como. Whew! Now to get to the point. We are also travelling from Zermatt and our destination is Bellagio on Lake Como. We were also told that the only way to get there was via Milano. So, can the suggestion by Mathias also apply to us? Is getting to Bellagio just as easy as getting to Como from Bellinzona? Also, we were told that if were planning to travel from Switzerland to Italy then we should not miss seeing Lugano as it is a beautiful spot! So - to summarise: Are we able to catch a train from Zermatt to Bellagio via Lugano within a day trip, allowing for a 2 hour stop over in Lugano? Also, how much of this trip would be covered by our Swiss Pass? As always, thanks in advance, Steve |
Hey steve did this like 2 years ago cheapest best to do regional train to Lugano take a short shuttle to Menaggio
like 12 euros 30 minutes or so 5 minutes mid-lake ferry to www.bellagio.info Swias pass will cover all swiss trains So you will be fine might cost the pass out per day usually does not save much seat61.com/switzerland. Stayed at Residence D'Ulivo on Villa Serbelloni grounds 120 EU hotelscombied.com last hotelflorencebellagio.it nice also been around a while very historic Mark Twain stayed there. Happy Planning! |
Steve, from Zermatt consider going to Stresa on Lago Maggiore instead. A great destination and really easy logistics from Zermatt.

Como is a town at the foot of Lake Como. Bellagio is on Lake Como halfway up and at some distance from Como town.
The train trip from Domodossola to Locarno is called the Centovalli. It's one of the most scenic train trips in Europe. But traveling from Zermatt to Domodossola requires one change of trains. The Centovalli station in Locarno is a bus ride away from the main train station. Then from Locarno, you can travel with one change to Como town and catch a boat up the lake to Bellagio. If I've added correctly that's 5 trains, a bus and a boat. Via Milan, it's 2 trains to Milano Centrale, the train to Varenna-Esino, then a short ferry ride to Bellagio. Not a straightforward journey in any case. |
Thanks again for all your helpful replies.
Mimar - I think you put a pretty good argument for heading directly to Milano Centrale. We might have to wait for a second trip to Europe to catch up with Lugano. :-( Thanks again for all your input. Regards, Steve |
For anyone who has the time the most scenic route would be the glacier express (express is a bit of a misnomer!) to Saint Moritz and then the Swiss postal bus from St. Moritz to Lugano getting off at Menaggio and taking the ferry across to Bellagio. An alternative would be taking the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy and continuing the journey from there.
