We stayed at Chesa Valese in June which is low season and good rates. Lovely hotel with very nice staff and includes breakfast. www.chesa-valese.ch

Kate,
Zermatt is the most tourist-friendly town you'll visit anywhere. Tons of nearby rooms, many of them inexpensive, and all linked to a pushbutton tourist phone at the train station (where everyone arrives).

I stayed at the Mischabel for $45. Just fine for me. But since it's Low Season for Zermatt, you might consider paying a couple extra bucks for a south-facing Matterhorn terrace view -- or, even better, staying at one of the chalets up the Gornigrat railway, right next to the mountain.
