Zermatt hotel
 

I am looking for a hotel (have done lots of searches already) where the rooms have lots of wood and charm and a balcony with a view. Doesn't need to be a 4 star. Just lots of wood and charm. Nothing modern or boring. Very swiss... any suggestions??

While the rooms at Hotel Julen were recently redone and now have some wildly colorful designer fabrics, the authenticity of the wood details is still very much apparent. We approached the idea of a terrace with a view with caution, expecting it to be minimal, but when we opened our draperies, the Matterhorn nearly knocked us right off our feet. They seem to require a half-pension as do a lot of places, but the food is very nice and you can also choose their "cellar" for dinner if you want for a more traditional feel.

I'm afraid it is four star, so not sure if that comment was reserved for price considerations.

The palce we have usually stayed probably doesn't have enough wood but if all else fails you might try searching on www.zermatt.ch (there is an English-language version)

In April 2002 we had a lovely night at the very friendly and comfortable Hotel Dufour. Lots of wood on the outside - pretty room on the inside, with balcony. It's a three star 'hotel garni' ie without restaurant. We booked a cheaper room on the southside but they upgraded us to one on the northside, with a wonderful view of the Matterhorn.

We stayed here http://www.chesa-valese.ch/ 2 years ago. Lots of beautiful wood, great breakfast and if you ask for a room with a balcony view you can wake up to the sun shining on the Matterhorn.

you must stay at the Allalin! ask for Room 56 - best room in MHO.

Have used the HOTEL SCHWEIZERHOF the
last few times to Zermatt, namely due to its having a swimming pool. before that used once the MONTE ROSA and the
room had a full window view of the Matterhorn, quite a view. Have read
good reports on the JULEN in past posts
over the years. Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

This was a great place to stay, down a little lane from the center of town, full of wood, beautiful!
