Zell Am See - Must Dos

Dear All,

We will be in Zell Am See in May 2012 for four days and will be relying on public transport. Have read about the following attractions :
1.cable car to the top of the Schmittenhoehe,
2.bus to Kaprun and cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier,
3.a bus tour on the Grossglockner.
4. Krimml waterfalls
5. Werfen Ice Caves (must do)
6. Visit to Salzburg (must do)

Please advise out of Schmittenhoehe and Kitzsteinhorn glacier which is a must do (weather permitting) and which we can skip. Can any of this cable car excursions be combined with Krimml waterfalls or any other attraction?

Have ready a lot about Grossglockner bus tour but not sure if it operates in May.

Any details on the above attractions and which can be done in half days, please advise.

In case I have missed out on any attraction (which is a must do) please advise. Are there any boat rides etc. possible on the Zell lake?

Which are the local supermarkets in Zell Am See? Any recommendations of local eateries serving hearty Austrian fare are welcome. We are not into la-di-dah stuff so no frills and fancies expected in any place.

Kind regards,

I see that you have similar things planned for Zell am See like for the Innsbruck area. Kitzsteinhorn glacier is similar to Stubai glacier, and Schmittenhöhe is similar to Patscherkofel.

When in May are you travelling? The Großglockner Hochalpenstrasse opens late in May, Schmittenhöhe is in operation from 15 May on.

The waterfalls are very nice. That's a *must* IMO.

I'd say do the mountain excursions as soon as possible if the weather is co-operating. Might happen that later in the Innsbruck area the weather changes and then it would not make sense to go up to a glacier. And if it's bad weather in Zell am See, skip Kitzsteinhorn and hope for better weather for Stubai glacier.

I.

Zell am Zee has had a McDonald's for about 30 years, so it isn't that pretty little town any more.

I've skied Schmittenhöhe several times. The cable to the top is to the ski lodge.

Hi,

We loved our visits to Zell am See in 11/07 and again in 9/09. There are cruises on the lake plus you can rent electric boats (we did this) and tour the lake on your own. The electric boat was about 20 Euro per hour.We rented it for the hour. You'll find them along the lakeside promenade.

Thanks all for your quick reverts.

Ingo, yes we will arrive in Vienna and fly out from Munich in the first 2 weeks of May. Guess we will miss the Grossglockner road trip if it is closed. That is disappointing. Spend 4 days in Vienna, then on to Zell Am See, next base to be decided between Seefeld, Innsbruck and Garmisch and then move to Munich.

This will be our first trip to Austria and the second one to Munich. Not sure when we would be back next. Hence all the queries so that we get best value for money spent.

Just for my info - how do you handle the electric boats independently.

One more query - planning to buy Sparschien tickets in advance online for Vienna-Zell and Zell-to next point as I understand that we cannot buy them at the train station.
On the oebb and dbahn sites though I indicate 2 adults and 2 children of 11 yrs and 10 yrs, the site only processes tickets and shows a total for 2 adults. Do the children travel free on our tickets or am I making an error? Ticket availability shows as 6 tickets or 8 tickets and for some trains 2 tickets for the Sparschien fares.

Kind regards,
Sherazade

Hi,

You walk up, pay and get in the boat. I forget if it seats 2 or four people. It has a lever to control the speed (they don't go fast) and a steering wheel.

It's simple and fun.

You won't be dissapointed as Zell is not a la-di-dah sort of place. We had a good night drinking at the railway station bar with the local kids.

Good skiing, but the centre of Austrian middle class stodge.
