what about www.iyhf.org and then follow the links to the English-Welsh hostels (Scotland has its own hostels)? These are the official hostels, rather pricier, but usually better, although in other hostels you might find another atmosphere, if you're looking for it. All touristic places in England -well, almost every town- has its own tourism office open in Summer at least, where you can have all the info you need for free, city-plans and accommodation possibilities, from campgrounds and hostels to 5star hotels.
