Your suggestions for Capri in June...
 

We will be leaving for Italy in about a week and plan to visit Capri for a daytrip. We did this last year and it was quite crowded and I'm not sure I would do this again except we are traveling with friends who have never been. So aside from taking the funicular up to the main piazza and walking around, is there anyone who can suggest how to get more out of this experience? We are big time walkers but one of the people with us is an older gentleman, so not sure if a climb would work. Also, last year we just ducked into someplace just off the piazza for lunch and it was fine, but can anyone suggest a place to stop and eat and enjoy the sights of Capri? Thanks!

Go on up (by bus) to less-crowded Anacapri and then take the lift to the top of Monte Solaro.

Hi RB - I second TuckH's sugestion.

I usually go 'against the flow' and head straight up to Anacapri/ Monte Solaro chairlift (- to avoid the crowds going up to Capri on the funicular). There is a bus from the port (- Marina Grande) direct to Anacapri ...

I usually have lunch down at Marina Piccola - and end my visit in Capri town (- by which time the crowds have usually thinned).

Good ideas. Thanks. Can you tell me what Marina Piccolo is? I assume Marina Grande is where one disembarks from the ferry.

The lift to the top was our favorite part of our daytrip to Capri! The views from the top are spectacular - take pictures. There's a beautiful place to relax (and perhaps a glass of wine) at the top as well.

How do you get to Marina Piccolo from the arriving ferry, and how long does it usually take?

There are a couple of restaurants.

There are buses from Capri town. Otherwise it's a pleasant walk down (- 20-30 mins, if I remember ...)

Steve - not trying to hi-jack this thread, but could you advise as to my earlier question, and as well advise as to approximate legths of time for the ferry from Capri to each of Positano, Sorrento, and Naples - the site only provides departing times for ferries, not approximate durations for travel.

Spent 2 nights on Capri on my last trip and the crowds were definitely NOT my cup of tea!

I did the chairlift, hiked up to Villa Jovis and the Arco Naturale, but the best thing I did was a boat ride around the island. Delightful! Beautiful day, fresh air, no crowds, great scenery (even though the blue grotto was closed due to rough seas). I went with a company that had small, wooden boats holding about 15 passengers. Saved the hwole Capri experience for me.

I had a great grilled seafood lunch at Villa Verde in town.

A question about the chairlift to Monte Solaro:

is it one person per chair? We are going with two children, ages 10 and 6. I am assuming that I can't put them on a chair alone. Is it possible to seat an adult and a child on one chair? If not, I guess, we won't be able to do it.

The chairlift has single chairs and it was a safe and easy ride - I think the children might be able to do it - don't discount it until you find out for sure. If the six year old wouldn't want to or couldn't take the ride up I would hike to the top with him or her. It is the most beautiful view at the top and well worth the effort getting there. As I recall we road the chairlift up and then hiked down and it was an easy hike going down - going up for a six year old might not be so fun, but take your time and some snacks and water. You could also bribe him or her with gelato when you get down, there is a gelato shop right next to the chairlift. It'll be worth it - have a great time.

In addition to a boat ride around Capri and a ride on the chair lift, you might consider stopping at the Villa San Michele in Anacapri - interesting objet d'art, lovely garden, great views. Enjoy!

I would suggest taking a bus or taxi to Anacapri. Then walk to Villa San Michele (Axel Munthe's House). It is an amazing place to visit. It's a nice walk from the bus station/main area in Anacapri, but all flat ground and no climbing. On the way to the Villa are a bunch of nice little shops for souvenirs and snack shacks for a cold drink, etc.

you can go to Anacapri by bus € 1,40, or by cab € 25 (5 persons - maybe easier for your older friend).
Villa Axel Munthe has an amazing view and the church of San Michele is really nice, the majolica floor beautiful and few tourists go there.
Pizzeria/ristorante le Arcate in Anacapri makes a good pizza
After lunch you can go to Capri for a short walk or back to the Port where they offer boat rides around the island. The ride is very nice! we had a lovely full day with a guide from vesuviusvspompei, very helpful and informative.
If you don't want to go to Anacapri, there is a belvedere in Capri called Tragara. a longer walk from Capri center but flat. On the way to Tragara are many restaurants and a nice view. Brunela Terrace is the most panoramic
