Your mission, should you choose to accept it is this...You have $5000 to spend for two people anywhere...where would you go?
 

I have been putting money aside for a trip for my husband and I. We can go at any time of year. So far I have $5,000 set aside for airfare and hotel accomodations. We both love to travel, but so far our trips to Europe revolve around my husband's business travel to Italy, where we squeeze out three or four days out of a week or two trip. (The most has been 6, 3 in Venice, 3 in Florence, and 5 days in Milan)We've been to Paris,and Malta as well.

Where would YOU go? We're pretty open to anything, other than a cruise...been on one Caribbean cruise and decided it wasn't for us.

That is always tough not knowing you. But, given 5 grand I would think either Ireland or Portugal in Sep. for 10 days. Or, a wild card option, how about Barbados in Nov.

Hmmm ! I swear I had not seen your other post when I said Ireland for 10 days.

Budman,I am working on an alternative since my husband is not all that thrilled with the Ireland idea. We live in Detroit, suze, and I don't consider that too personal at all. Our original plan was to spend 10 days in Ireland this fall. But my husband is growing less and less thrilled with the idea, don't know why. He really wants to go to Macchu Pichu and Galapagos, and though I would LOVE to visit both of these places I don't think that fits in with our budget. So, I told him I would go visit a travel agent and present the very question I have asked all of you. But I thought, why not ask the people who actually DO all the traveling, not someone who plans the trips!

I know it's difficult to make suggestions for people when you don't know them, I just thought I'd get some ideas that maybe I hadn't considered...maybe if I can get him fired up about this trip he'll be more inclined to go where I want next year!

I'd opt for the Galapagos Islands. Everyone I hear who goes there says it's an experience of a lifetime.

Thailand, or anywhere in South East Asia.
My husband and I just spent 9 days in Thailand and spent a total of $4200 on the trip for the two of us, including international and domestic (Thai) airfare and 8 nights in 5 star hotels. You could easily do it for less depending on the types of hotels you like.

Consider southern Germany - it's so beautiful and the people are very nice. I spent a month just touring So. Germany - so much to see. My trip was Sept/Oct and the weather was generally good and the fall colors were there. If you'd like my trip report (diary, really) for some ideas, just e-mail me at [email protected].

Also, Thailand (but only in December/January cuz it's so hot) or China - these places would give you a totally different experience. I would go back to both in a heartbeat.

And, then there's Turkey - absolutely fabulous! From the beginning of civilization to modern times. Turkey is the top of my list of countries I've visited. Nancy

P.S. I have diaries on all of the above.

For about a $1,000 airfare each to Bangkok, you can see a lot of SE Asia for the remaining $3,000, if you stay at moderately priced places. Bridge over the River Kwai area, Ankor Wat and the "killin fields" of Cambodia, a boat trip down the Mekong and/or a Thai beach for some R and R at the end. I love S.E. Asia, its people and its food!! Enjoy!

I second Thailand; an incredible country and relatively inexpensive.

The Thailand idea really makes a lot of sense. Since you're in the Detroit area, you can play with it on Northwest WorldVacations and you will be amazed at what you can get for your money in terms of luxury hotels and low airfare. By packaging, you get access to airfares that aren't generally available by themselves. It's really a very interesting place to visit and you'll also get enough flight miles to be two-thirds of the way toward silver elite with just that single trip.
