Best way to fly on this trip
Next June I will be flying from Chicago to Naples for a wedding on the Amalfi coast. Then I am heading to Paris for a week and then home to Chicago. The fares right now for that are about $1800. That seems high to me. Is it better to wait and see if they come down? Also, should I instead book round trip to Paris and then take a smaller airline roundtrip to Naples? I SO APPRECIATE YOUR HELP!

I just looked up a dummy run for Chi to Milan and then back from CDG on Orbitz. Looks like flights are running around $1,200. A cheapo flight from Milan to Paris won't cost much if you book far enough ahead.

look at these two sites for budget airline fares within Europe
www.whichbudget.com
www.skyscanner.com
Be very aware that some of the flights may not be non-stop

The fares being quoted now for travel next June look to be about $150-$200 above last June. Going in and out of Paris plus the lowest budget flight to Naples won't save anything plus may require you to juggle Paris airports depending on airline and flight time. Going Chicago-Naples on one ticket will require changing planes somewhere so you can balance the total length of the flights against the cost.
Nobody, including the airlines, can be sure what price levels will be in June, the start of high season, but gamblers might hope for short sales in late fall or early winter.

I have this funny suspicion that even if there ARE airline sales they are not going to cover the busiest travel dates.
Perhaps it might be easier if you fly from Chicago to ROME and make your way by rail from there to Naples.
You could then fly from Naples to Paris and home from there.
Since Easyjet flies between Naples and Paris you could, if you want, fly to Paris first and change but I suspect the cost might be equivalent if you fly into Rome and out of Paris to chicago.

Whoops, Aramis, you are so right Milan is not Naples. Inattention and Alzheimer's strike again. I re-did the search on Orbitz, this time for Naples in early June, and still got a fare on Turkish Airlines with one stop for $1141.20.

If it's open jaw returning from Paris,it's a good price.
