Kathleen, we did not have any issues with service the last time we went: all of the servers were prompt and efficient.
It was on the pricier side, but you can control that in how much and what you order along with the wine.
We had originally intended to go to Chutney Mary, but the new location hadn't opened yet. Whole group (9 people) were very pleased with Veeraswamy.

I didn't say the service was bad -- I said iffy. I've been there a few times (maybe 5 X over 20 years - the last about 18 months ago) and sometimes the service is fine but - at least twice it hasn't been.

I guess it depends what you mean by central London, but I liked Noor Jahan on Bina Gardens (S Kensington, I guess).

The best we found about two years ago: a southwest India restaurant on a small street, located behind St Ermin's Hotel, called Quilon, 41 Buckingham Gate, Westminster, London SWIE 6AF
www.quilon.co.uk
This place was so wonderful: great atmosphere, perfect service, and the FOOD might be the best we have eaten anywhere. Really.
A few years ago we found the excellent Indian restaurant down the street from the Hyde Park Radnor, the “Noorjahan 2” at 26 Sussex Place. I had an amazing prawn dish with shrimp so big you'd think they were lobster tails, in this incredible sauce.

Our long-time favorite is the Standard Indian Restaurant in Westbourne Grove, a large ethnic district. I hope the restaurant is still in business, as we had the best Indian food in Britain there for years.

"Our long-time favorite is the Standard Indian Restaurant in Westbourne Grove, a large ethnic district."
Self-evidently, all districts anywhere are ethnic (we've all got some ethnicity), so it's not clear what this description is meant to mean.
If it's some offensive piece of American jargon that's supposed to mean residents aren't white, or protestant, or some other privileged group, it's obvious the comment comes from someone dismally unfamiliar with London.
Westbourne Grove is certainly as cosmopolitan as anywhere else in London - but for most of this century, that's meant it's full of HK billionaires, and not the hard-working poor immigrants Americans consign to ghettoes.
As a result, rents have recently soared, and the Standard closed a couple of years ago - though the management's flirtation with religious fundamentalism, and consequent refusal to serve alcohol, didn't help.

Thanks everyone. This is an amazing list of quality restaurants for anyone visiting or living in London. For our upcoming trip, I've booked Trishna for dinner and made specific plans, but did not book, a late lunch at Dishoom. We plan on Ottolenghi for a lunch, too, at one of their locations. Tough decisions.
London is less than a week away for us and we are all really looking forward to our visit! We're counting on weather much cooler than what we have presently in South Carolina. Thank you all.

I lived quite close to Westbourne Grove. I believe Underhill is referring to the incredible variety of ethnic restaurants, including a chippie or two.
Up Queensway and along to Westbourne Grove, there's something for any taste. Variable quality but great fun.
Why, flanner, must you read negativity into almost all comments from Americans? It's boring and strains the credibility of your more lucid comments.

BritishCaicos, One of the reasons we chose Trishna is that is says it focuses on British seafood in combination with the local cuisine of SW India. My husband is a fan of all seafood and this combination intrigued him. And yes, we do have amazing local seafood (and chefs) here on the coast of South Carolina. I've been reading your posts of your visits to our region and it appears you're a fan.
Westbourne Grove is an area that we hadn't planned to visit, but it is relatively close to Hyde Park. So who knows, we could wander there. Thanks for pointing it out.
