Your favorite day trip.
What is youur favorite day trip from London?
St. Albans
I don't do many day trips since when I go to the UK it is usually for a few weeks so I normally devote my London time to London and go the other places when I am outside of the city.

But when I am advising folks during my travel seminars these are the ones I most recommend:

Hampton Court palace
Windsor
Avebury/Stonehenge/Salisbury
Avebury/Bath
Warwick
Oxford and/or the Cotswolds
York
Canterbury
Cambridge
Du xford Air museum

Also Hampstead Heath and Kew Gardens but they are really in London.

I don't usually recommend Eurostar to Paris for a day trip because it is too expensive for the short time you get in Paris. I figure if you are going to spend that much money go to Paris for a few days instead of trying to squeeze it in to one day.

there are a hundred other great places within a days journey but I think these are some of the best for the first time travelers.
I didn't daytrip from London, but I love Oxford and highly recommend it for a visit or a stay.
My favorite daytrips from London (tied for first place): Bletchley Park, Oxford (for the Ashmolean Museum) and Longleat.
Blow the night away and sleep during the day
Hampton Court Palace is absolutely wonderful and very easy to get to from London. Go on a sunny day and just enjoy the gardens and grounds. It is an absolutely beautiful royal palace.
Trip to the airport to catch the plane and on the way there realizing that I don't have to spend one more day in London
Hampton Court and then to Kew Gardens with Tea at the Maids of Honor.
Bath or York
Bath, York, Cambridge, or Oxford.
I have two: Bath and Dover.
Definitely Windsor!
Bath and York are too good to be just "day trips"!
Bath is perfect for a day trip IMO. And it can be combined with Avebury as Janis suggests.
