Your favorite area in Venice and why?
 

What is your favorite area in Venice:
San Polo & Santa Croce
San Marco
Castello
Dorsoduro
Cannaregio
La Giuderca & San Giorgio (Lido)
This is our second time in Venice and I would like to get to know it a little better.

I enjoyed the Dorsoduro, but that's where my hotel was located. I liked the promonade along the Guidecca canal. but I'm not sure it's memorable in a way that I'd make a special point of going there, if I was staying in a different part of the city.

Myself I am interested in seeing the Lido next time.

I spend most of my time in San Polo and Dorsoduro.

It seems as if many of my favorite shops/restaurants are located in these two sestieri.
I also find in the autumn the late morning light is especially sweet in Dorsoduro....and Guidecca.

Great walks have included... the far eastern end of Castello....the southern area of Guidecca....Murano, the northern area, near the playing field.

I do have to say...every sestiere has pockets of mystery. Every time I go to Venice I promise myself that I'm going to pick a sestiere and walk down every calle and explore every campo. I'm always side-tracked.
Maybe I need to spend a year in Venice??

Another vote for Dorsoduro/San Polo. Many points of interest (churches, museums), many restaurants and cafes, a less frenzied vibe than San Marco, which is still easily accessible by taking a public gondola (traghetto) across the Grand Canal.

For some reason we've always stayed in Castello. So finding our favorite restaurant (Corte Sconta) is easy-:)

We just spent a week in Venice with an apartment in Castello. It is fairly close to St Mark's but not nearly so crowded. Lots of excellent restaurants (Vini Al Covo was next door) good shops and a pleasant ambiance. It's also close to a great street, Corso Garibaldi, for strolling and visiting outdoor markets.
