Young hip quartier and hotel in Paris on budget

My 24-year-old daughter and her boyfriend are visiting in Paris around Thanksgiving. They want to stay in a young, hip area on the cheap. Like, $80 per night max. The fifth? Isn't the 11th now sort of hip? Ideas of arrondissements and hotels, please. Thanks.

We love the 11th. Oberkampf area is very hip and filled with young people t night. We always stay at the Cosmos Hotel for €72 a night. http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/

$80 a night might be tough.

Ask on the Lonely Planet Thorntree. Lots of young and hip travelers there.

I think the 11th was hip maybe 10+ years ago, already. I don't think the 5th is "hip", usually it is areas that have been cheaper and are just starting to be up and coming that are considered that. Like maybe the 9th-10th or even 18th-20th.

I don't think $80 a night is going to happen in any hip hotel, that is a pretty low amount of money to spend in any major city in Europe or the US, it's only about 60 euro.

There are some cheaper hotels in the 11th, that is a good idea of a place to look. Mama Shelter used to be presented a a cheap hip hotel in the 20th, but its rates are more like 100 euro now or more. I suggest they look on www.eurocheapo.com for some hotels in the 11th. Mary's is one of the cheapest I know in that area, a 1*, and its doubles are around 75 euro. http://www.marys-paris-hotel.com

$80/€60 and 'hip' are pretty exclusive terms.

They probably need more $$$ or stay in a hostel

The area in the 11th around rue Oberkampf / Place de la République / Parmentier would be an area they would like and I bet they could find a room there for between 50€ and 70€ but it won't be hip, rather it will likely be small and basic but that doesn't mean it won't be clean, efficient and well located. Just google the phrase "paris hotels (enter your arrondissement)" and you'll get a map of hotels for anywhere in Paris. You'll notice that many hotels don't even have websites but enough do. Click on hotels in the area that interest you and check rates etc. For example, I found these hotels in the area I mentioned above with rooms from 50€ to 75€.

The 11th still wears the Parisian crown of hip. But the edge of any of the surrounding arrondissements can be good, too: 10th, 3rd, 12th...

Apparently the "new Oberkampf" is now the rue de Clignancourt area just below eastern Montmartre in the 18th. But as a resident of the 18th, even I would say that it is probably still a bit too early to want to stay there unless you want to stay more centrally in Montmartre (which has excellent bars on rue des Abbesses) and maybe just make an excursion to the new area to see if you like it.

I would also suggest that you'll find some good deals on places in the lower 20th not far from the Place de la Nation, such as this:

I'd try the 10th for on a budget. I like the 10th and have stayed there several times, but at a friend's apartment. But, you can probably find a more budget type of hotel in parts of it.

Happy Travels!

It's true that there are many budget hotels in the 10th. In any case, nobody needs to really be staying "where the action is" since the transportation system is so efficient. And young people would probably even appreciate being able to use a Vélib to get around.

Or maybe they should look for an apartment.

They will most likely need to up their budget a bit.

Happy Travels!

If they are staying a few days, they could consider staying in an apartment. They are often a better value than a hotel - just have them make sure to book one with good reviews.

http://www.homelidays.co.uk/ is a good place to look and they can search by arrondisement with the comments above in mind.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I think they're going to try airbnb and stay in the 11th near Republique. This was all helpful.
