You expect me to eat that???

When I was 10 years old, my dad took me to Spain for the first time. He took me out to a very nice restaurant in Sevilla. I told him I wanted pasta for dinner. When the meal arrived, I looked down at a plate full of baby eels! YUCK! What is the most exotic meal you have had abroad?

jenviolin Aug 23rd, 2003 01:01 AM

"What's the most adventurous food you've ever tried..."
Calamari, there is another thread going on this subject; search on this title. You might want to add your pasta story there.

BrimhamRocks Aug 23rd, 2003 01:29 AM

(gagging...)

ira Aug 23rd, 2003 02:29 AM

Baby eels are OK, except that they wiggle a lot and tickle on the way down.

BTW baby eels are called "elvers".

Intrepid Aug 23rd, 2003 02:47 AM

It's when they come back out of you that you have to worry!

dln Aug 23rd, 2003 05:15 AM

Thank you everyone for the delightful way you have just made my coffee go down. :?

BrimhamRocks Aug 23rd, 2003 11:34 AM

Ahhhh......

We have so many well-eeled, eelectric personalities on this forum. What would I do without you all?

(grin)

capo Aug 23rd, 2003 11:45 AM

Aren't baby eels from the feet of British babies? Sounds rather ghastly to even think about eating those.

BrimhamRocks Aug 23rd, 2003 11:47 AM

eww capo

Scarlett Aug 23rd, 2003 12:48 PM

capo-eels are those things that hang on eelephants! they are a taste treat in some far away lands :)

Calamari Aug 23rd, 2003 03:46 PM

It actually was not as bad as haggas (sp?) and not as good as sea urchin.

logandog Aug 23rd, 2003 10:36 PM

Once, while stationed in Gordonia, we were offered undercooked splinel.

Marilyn Aug 23rd, 2003 10:44 PM

Goat in a bucket, in Mexico. Don't ask -- it was disgusting. For the rest of that trip the running joke was, "I'm so hungry, I could suck the hairs off a goat!"

In Japan I ate things I couldn't even name, and they were raw.

Calamari Aug 24th, 2003 08:17 AM

Marilyn, O.K. I think you win!

Marilyn Aug 24th, 2003 10:05 AM

Thanks, Calamari (and what an appropriate name that is for this particular thread, although I share your love for it). I am afraid to ask what the prize is. :-$

Calamari Aug 24th, 2003 05:20 PM

I think it will definiately have to be something served in a bucket.

Calamari Aug 27th, 2003 03:39 PM

Marilyn

Will you be serving anything from a bucket at the forderite soiree?

Marilyn Aug 27th, 2003 04:00 PM

I wasn't planning to, Calamari, but do you think our adventurous fodors gourmets would appreciate "Cabrito Rico a la bucket"? (That's "boo-kay" as the woman on the BBC sitcom says.) :-D

Marilyn Aug 27th, 2003 04:03 PM

PS I heard a rumor (well, ok, I read it on another post) that you are thinking of gracing our soiree with your lovely presence. Since it is a potluck, I would look forward to one of your specialties, calamari fritti perhaps? You are welcome to use my kitchen to prepare it!

swalter518 Aug 27th, 2003 04:03 PM

Logandog, I just quickly read your post and thought it said Spaniel!!! All I could think about was my furry friend at home! YIKES. My grandfather was from the old country (Poland) and loved pigs feet--blech!!

BrimhamRocks Aug 27th, 2003 04:50 PM

logandog, I'm wondering where Gordonia is? The only references I can find in association with anything named Gordonia are references to bacteria, and an evergreen plant.

However, I did find one bizarre website...would someone please let me know if I'm nuts - this is a spoof, right??

http://www2.2alpha.com/~wendellj/gordadv.htm

Marilyn Aug 27th, 2003 05:10 PM

Brim, that website on Gordonia is hysterical. Makes you wonder how many other loony sites are out there just waiting to be discovered. I loved the "feral biogenetically engineered police dogs" and the "infectious carpal tunnel syndrome". It sounds like it was written by someone who works for the US govt -- they sure got the language and style right. Thanks for the laugh!

Calamari Aug 27th, 2003 06:19 PM

Marilyn,
Cabrito Rico ala boo-kay? Could that be baby donkey or goat in a rich sauce served in your bucket? Martha Stewart told me to tell you that you need to return ALL of you MSL magazines to her. I might show up for the party but I think I will stop off at Mc Donalds before hand. Just kidding.

Calamari Fitti would really stink up your house so how about something that would make everyone salivate. Something with truffles and a light cream sauce. Roasted leg of lamb with fresh rosemary and a case of Borollo perhaps?

Marilyn Aug 27th, 2003 06:27 PM

Oh god I'm salivating. It's a good thing we're about to eat din. "Cabrito rico" is indeed "kid" or baby goat. Maybe some time I'll tell the whole story. Let's just say there was a very high "must eat" factor -- we were the guests of honor and the family was poor.

Calamari Aug 27th, 2003 06:32 PM

and you were very "high". Sorry, could not resist.

Marilyn Aug 27th, 2003 06:46 PM

When the first plate of cabrito was served, my dear, dear friend Linda (who shall someday receive what she deserves) passed it to me as a great honor. Sitting on the plate in all its glory was the spinal column. It's a good thing we weren't high because we had a difficult enough time as it was!

Seriously, you can stink up my kitchen with wonderful food any day. We'll just open the windows.

And to clear up a small misconception, I am ORGANIZING this fete, but it will not be at my house. Another kind and brave fodorite who actually lives in SF is the hostess. I do hope you'll come up!

Calamari Aug 27th, 2003 07:01 PM

Oh my superior being...you ate spinal column? That plate of baby eels is looking better by the post!

I would LOVE to come to the gathering of great traveling minds. I do have some responsibilities here at home in San Diego that are quite pressing. I suppose it all boils down to the date.

Thank you for your gracious invitation.

BrimhamRocks Aug 28th, 2003 01:42 AM

Yes, Marilyn, the 'infectious carpal tunnel syndrome' cracked me up, too! I got a real kick out of that site, but with the fake State Dept header at the top of the page, I just wanted someone else to confirm it was a spoof, LOL.

BrimhamRocks Aug 28th, 2003 01:52 AM

Oh yeah, and speaking of other 'loony websites just waiting to be discovered'...

A friend of mine in CO sent me this website. Apparently this is a REAL law firm, no joke, but with a major dose of 'tude!! OMG, I would hire these guys in a minute, if I ever lived in CO and needed a kick-a$$ attorney.

http://www.ppbfh.com/

(you must read the ENTIRE website....each page has something even funnier than the last one, on it. There's even a disclaimer at the bottom of the home page, telling you in advance to expect the unexpected on that site. However, if you really need to hire their legal services, the serious stuff is on there, too. It's almost worth a trip to CO, just to meet them!)

BrimhamRocks Aug 28th, 2003 02:15 AM

And in case you doubt they're real...
