York Trip

Just did a day trip from London to York the other weekend and had a great experience!

It was a bit rainy (it is January, after all), but my friends and I went to the castle, the famous York Minster cathedral, the city walls, and some of the historic churches.

We had an amazing lunch at J Baker's Bistro Moderne, which I high recommend (the 12 GBP lunch special was a great value for three courses).

I wrote up more details in my blog, too:

Yes, Kings Cross to York can take less than 2 hours if you pick the right train, although I know from comments I read on here that people sometimes think it is is 'too far' from London for a day trip. (My husband commutes to work in central London from near York a day or so a week, as so many other people we know).
Plus you can be off the train and into the heart of the city in minutes. The Railway Museum itself (free entry and excellent)is a 3 minute pedestrianised walk from the station.

2 questions for you:
Was a day sufficient?
How did you find that 9 pound fare?

A day was a good amount of time, but I could have used one extra to see more of the museums.

I found the 9 pound fare because I subscribe to the National Rail newsletter and they sent a note about it back in Oct/Nov.

And what do you think of one week in the area, because i am considering with my girlfriend to see some more places in the UK as i have not been much out of London. We want to go somewhere north like Yorkshire or maybe Northumbria http://www.sykescottages.co.uk/coast...rthumbria.html to have week of for relax, rent some nice cottage as i found them cheapper than B&B and it suits me more to have whole cottage rather than just room and we may even go with friends therefore self catering cottages are for us better choice.

I took a day trip from Kings Cross to York last year. I visited the Minster, had lunch at Betty's and went to the fabulous train museum. I also managed to do some shopping. I packed alot into a day and I think I'll go back for 2-3 days sometime to do some of the countryside as well.
