Lincoln for one - one of England's best cathedrals, a castle, the Magna Carta, good museums; Steep Hill and Bailgate are lovely medieval streets with nice shops, teashops, etc.

Stamford has some pretty streets and has served as a set for a TV bonnet drama (I forget which - Middlemarch?).

The East side of the country has its promoters, but you're totally missing out the West side, through the Lake District, Manchester,Liverpool and Chester.

Lots of history going back to Roman times, the Industrial revolution, when the North West was the centre of the developing world and great present day buildings and things to see.
