York: Sunday or Monday

In our short stay in England we want to spend a day in YORK. In our itinerary we have either a Sunday or a Monday free. We would like to do a couple of guided tours, among other things. We will have a car. Would Sunday be too crowded? Would some places be closed on either Sunday or Monday? Thank you.

http://www.britainexpress.com/cities...ttractions.htm semms like a very useful site to me. I cannot see any problems with a Monday as most of England is not into the lundi ferm, lunes cerrado, dilluns tancat scene.
Museums and the like are open on the Sunday but you really ought to see the Minster unless you are totally impervious to great architecture [and other churches as well if you are an enthusiast.] I understand that on parts of a Sunday there could be a certain difficulty with this [!] - but it could still be managed.

Sunday is likely to be more crowded than Monday, what with local, national and international tourists all piling in together at the weekend. Monday will be more realistic, in that you will sense how the city goes about its business when not totally given over to tourism.
Make sure you have a cuppa at Betty's, and buy your cakes and biscuits to take away at 1/3 of the sit-down price.

Doesn't matter a bit...the best to see is the Castle museum, the train museum, the shambles and the Minster plus a boat ride if the weather is nice. Lovely!

While almost all tourist sites are open on Sundays, the Minster and other churches are closed to visitors or restricted during services. You can't visit the Minster before around 1 pm, except to attend services (recommended for the splendid choir alone). Also, while larger stores are open, they are restricted to just six hours on Sundays, usually 11 am to 5 pm, and get extremely busy. A car is a liability in York and you should park outside of the city walls and walk. Most convenient are Clarence St car park to the east of the Minster and Marygate to the north by the river. Anything nearer the centre and you are restricted to only one or two hours, even on Sundays and there's a stiff penalty for violators including clamping and tow-away.
