York, England...need advice

Can anyone tell me please....

How far is it from the York train station to the ciy center? Is it just walking distance?

Your help is appreciated!

The train station is right outside the city walls. It is totally walkable . . . .

Why not use any site that does maps? You can google it, or get it on multimap. I would estimate that the train station (identified by a red logo and "York Rail" on google) is about 700 yards from the centre of York, about 1000 yards from York Minster. You don't even need to estimate it - you can just get the computer to get you directions from the station to wherever you want to go, and the distance comes with them.

JanisJ is right, it's just across the bridge from the centre about 10 min. Easily walkable.

There's an extremely good railway museum (even if you think you aren't that interested in trains) next to the station.

Indeed...I love the National Railway Museum in York

And it's free!

I just did the computer thing - 1400 yards from Rail Station to Jorvik Viking Centre, 880 yards from Rail Station to to York Minster. [My estimates were out, partly because I measured "as the crow flies".]

Can you please tell me what are the alternatives for travel between London and Welborn, York, assuming We arrive at Heathrow?

Sorry if I do not give the correct address.

We are thinking of visiting friends in York. But before we mention it, we are curious of few things. They live in Welborm and we do not wish to impose by staying with them.

So you can please tell us what accomodations may be in the area?

Thank you.

Aduchamp1: You might want to start a new thread w/ you own questions, since this one is specifically about the train station and central York.

But -- assuming you mean Welburn: It is near Malton and CastleHoward.

To get there from LHR would be a bit of a slog. You'd need to take the tube to King's Cross station in London and then a train up to York and then change trains to Malton where your friends should easily be able to pick you up.

Depending on what time you land and the day of the week - you probably could expect at least 6 hours from landing to arrival in Malton

Thanks everyone! I thought it was that close just wanted to be sure...and will surely go to the Railway Museum!
