York-daytrip from London

I'm taking a daytrip from London to York. I'm planning on visiting York Minister, the National Railway Museum for a quick visit (trains don't really excite me all that much)and the York Castle Museum, is there anything else I shouldn't miss? I'll be there from about 9:45 am-8 pm. Has anyone taken one of the York walks?

For lunch I'd like to find someplace quick, fish n chips maybe and for dinner a casual sit down restaurant, any recommendations? Kapadoyka looks interesting (although their website isn't functional) as does Meltons Too.

Thanks!

I have done the free walks starting from Exhibition Square (across from the TIC) a couple of times. A very worthwhile introduction to York. I have also done one of the special walks offered by www.yorkwalk.co.uk (Inaccessible York - Micklegate & Georgian York). Again very worthwhile, but probably not a priority on a one day visit.

Why go to a museum you don't have any interest in? Although, if you have an interest in royalty, you may find the collection of royal train carriages going back to 1840 worth a look.

For lunch, try the Last Drop Inn in the Shambles. It is associated with the York Brewery, so fine beers as well as good food.

I'd also do at least a short stroll along the tops of the medieval walls on the portions open to the public.

walking tour sounds like a good idea
there are also bus tours from York center to Castle Howard which is outside of town
It doesn't give you that much time at CH, but well worth seeing imo

Definately agree with ron-York has so many wonderful features-why waste your time in a museum you aren't interested in? Definately take a stroll along the walls, visit the Shambles, Y Olde Starr Inn, etc...and I would highly recommend taking a stroll through St. Mary's Abbey ruins around sunset...gorgeous! We stopped for lunch at Cafe Rouge:

and really enjoyed a quick baguette, brie and glas of wine while people watching. Enjoy-we'll be returning to York in Sept. and cannot wait!
