Yet another train question...Munich and beyond.
 

Please, please be patient with me. I need help with 2 segments (via train) and just don't understand all the options. :(

1- My son (19) and I want to go from Geising to Schwabing to Dachau (Concentration Camp)then to Olympic Park in the same day. Do I buy the partner all zone ticket? or just the MunichXXL?

2- About 8 days later, same son will leave from Munich Airport and train to Hengelo Netherlands. He is staying there for 7 or 8 days then train to Berlin to fly home. THis is the one that I have no clue as to what to do for him. Any suggestions?

I know our schedule seems strange, but it cannot change. Thank you for your patience and your repeated assistance. :)

If he's under 26 he can get a youth pass and take a look at least at the Benelux-Germany youth pass which could be cheaper than the walk up train fares in 2nd class - may not but could be. Starts at 5 days of unlimited travel in a 2-month period, a flexipass - costs currently $233 and a 6-day pass only $20 more or $53.

He could use it for the long Munich-Hengelo trips and Hengelo-Berlin trips and have three days to use with use in lieu of the 27 euro Lander passes (and as the extra day for the sixth is but $20 could be cheaper than doing a 27 euro lander ticket - though perhaps on Lander tickets more than one person can travel for 27 euros, i'mnot sure. go to www.bahn.de to get exact prices in euros for those long trips and to see if there are any SPAR, very cheap online only fares that are not always available and which often sell out quick and do the math. The beauty of the pass is that he canj just show up and hop any train as with SPAR fares they're for specific trains and are non-changeable non-refundable. Passes you just hop on. Any questions on the pass and for passes i always recommend the helpful folk at BETS (800-441-2387; www.budgeteuropetravel.com) for their expertise and lower mailing fees than RailEurope who they work thru. You may also look at another German specialist, www.euraide.com

and as Hengelo is just inside the Dutch border from Germany he may well also just conside the much cheaper German Youth pass, only for German trains and pay a few euros from German border to Hengelo. the German youth flexi is $192 for four days of travel in a one-month period so the Germany-Benelux pass gives 5 days at $40 so maybe that would be better after all.
But if you can get SPAR fares and put up with the restrictions he may find those cheaper. anyway www.bahn.de has all the schedules and fares.

Music Teacher is correct. There is some ambiguity here about the station. There is a station called "Giesing", but there is also a station called "Schöngeising". If you really mean "Giesing", it, as well as the Universität station, Dachau, and the Olympic Park are all in the XXL zones, so a partner XXL Tageskarte is all that you would need. However, if you mean Schöngeising, it is outside of the XXL zones by one station, so a "Kurzstrecke" (short trip) ticket for each person at €1,10 (€2,20) total would be more cost effective than switching to an All zones tageskarte. However, it appears from the schedule search, that right now you can only get from Schöngeising to Fürstenfeldbruck by bus, so that might not work. Best to ask at a ticket counter.

still typed it wrong. :( Hopefully this will all make sense when we get there.

One more stupid question. We will need to take a bus to Dachau from the train station. Do we buy a bus ticket at the train station, on the bus or does our train ticket cover the bus transfer?

If you are using the XXL day ticket, it will cover the bus to the memorial as well as the train to Dachau.

Any MVV day ticket (Innerzone, XXL, Outerzone, or All zones) covers transportation by all MVV conveyances (S- or U-Bahn, streetcars, or buses) within the zone).

If you buy point to point tickets for Dachau memorial, be sure to specify that you want to go all the way to the memorial.

Point to point tickets from Munich Hbf to Dachau or to Dachau memorial cost the same thing; they are both 2 zone tickets. A single person (adult), point to point ticket from Munich Hbf to Dachau by train or to the memorial by train and bus, one way, will cost €4,40.

An XXL Single-Tageskarte costs €6,70, less than a round trip. An XXL Partner-Tageskarte costs €11,80, less than a round trip ticket for 2 persons (and it is valid for up to 5 people).

So, obviously, the Tageskarten are the best deals.

Thank you. I think we are going with the partner XXl. That should cover everything we have to do. THe fact that the bus is included is GREAT! Can't wait. One more week before we leave.

Looks like the buses to the KZ-Gedenkstätte (memorial) leave from bus platform 2.

Larry what would the bus at Dachau Bf say on it "Denkmal" if you know or number?

I've never been to Dachau - never had much interest. I can only go by the information on various websites.

From MVV (www.mvv-muenchen.de), the bus is #726. It probably says "Saubach-Seidlung". From station plan given on Bayern-Takt, the bus leaves from bus platform 2, in front of the station.

I guess it depends on the website. Bayern-Takt says "Saubach-Siedlung".

Bayern-Takt also says bus 724 goes to KZ-Gedenkstätte, but MVV didn't show it for the times I put in. Could be 724 isn't synched with the train.

If the truth is subject to vote, it's Saubachsiedlung by a vote of 2 to 1. Bahn.de agrees with MVV.

They have 11 min, so that's plenty of time.
Saubachsiedlung or Saubach-Siedlung makes no difference. Most likely it'll be written in one word. ;-).
Saubach-Seidlung however is diferent. :-)

I do know how to spell in German, I just can't type.

The fact that the MVV website doesn't show connecting to 724 is probably that the 726 comes first. Also looks like 724 might drop off a little farther from the Gedenkstätte.
